Stuck in Dumas TX!!!!

The alternator in my 2001 Subaru Outback is shot and no one in the thriving metropolis of Dumas (population 17k) can get one before tomorrow. So the family and I are hanging out in the a local hotel. With any luck we will be on the road by noon tomorrow.

I'd really like to be mad but it really wouldn't change anything.

    It is out in the middle of nowhere but I actually liked going through there when I was young. There used to be a truck stop there called the Lyon-Bragg(sp) we stopped at all the time on our way to Colorado. I still get a laugh at that name because of the reputation of Texans (myself included) lieing and bragging so much. But like most Texans it's not lieing or bragging it's the truth.[:0][8D]

    Once we are on the road again the next stop will be Weatherford just west of Dallas. My wife's family has their Christmas/Thanksgiving this time every year so that no one has a good excuse not to come. I've debated just setting the Outback on fire...

    Its about 10 hours from home. We were on pace to do the whole 16 hours in a single day. We rolled out of Western CO at about 0430 today.

    If the family is with you next time go over to Antonito and ride the Narrow Gauge Train, or just drive over Cumbres Pass to Chama. Beautiful scenery.

    We love to take driving trips. I'm blessed with 2 kids that travel very well. Elk Jr. loves trains.

    What? You also went through Clayton, NM and right past the HiHo Cafe. Excellent truck-stop type fare and family friendly. We ALWAYS plan a stop there on the way to Colorado or Northern NM. Actually, Clayton is where we turn to head west to Red River, Taos, et al.

    Oh can't forget Clayton! Actually a much nicer town than Dumas. Never stopped at the HiHo. I'll see if I can find it on the way home.

    BTW ate dinner tonight at K-Bob here in Dumas. I highly recommend it.

    My dad lived there in his childhood, sometime in the 50's. Grandpa worked for Phillips Petroleum. I've never been. Post pics!![;)]

    We've eaten at the K-Bob, too, but I couldn't remember the name till I saw it in print in your post. Yep, good food. You can guess that a big part of traveling (for our family) is the cool places to eat. We rarely hit the fast food when traveling preferring rather to enjoy the "local flavor" spots along the way. [:)]

    i blew there on my way home last saturday from Colorado im glad i only see Dumass 2 times a year and the same for Stratford and Boise City OK. [:D][:D]

    yeah you could be stuck in worse places....I just can't think of any right now. I will be driving through Weatherford tomorrow on my way to Odessa. Going deer hunting woohoo.

    I used to win my share of money at the little indian casino just south of Cortez!

    I allways hated going through there though because of the way the truck scales are there!

    First off you have to totally leave the highway, and then to top it off the guys that worked those scales were total jerks!

    They never were able to find anything to write me a ticket for, but they sure did try!

    My favorite area in Colorado was around Monte Vista. I loaded potatoes there alot and got to spend a bit of time around there. The people were great and the country was real nice. I have looked into buying some land there many times but just never have done it.
