Wind tubines, anyone use one?

    My home owners association would have a fit if I used one but they can be very handy. A typical set up would generate anywhere from 800 to 2000 kilo watt hours of power per month, it depends on how constant the wind in your area is. Besides the turbine you'll also need the inverter to convert the power into useable electricity for your house as well as a tower, and in most cases the taller the tower the better. 40 feet would likely be the minimum height and 75 or ever 100 would be better. Costs on something like this vary but if you have the set up professionally installed I'd say you'd be looking at about $25K. Doing the work yourself will naturally save you a bundle and you should look into possible tax breaks and rebates. Keep in mind that if there is a power outage most of these systems are designed to automatically shut off in order to prevent their feeding power back into your utilites power grid. You'd need to design yours as a stand alone power system if you want to keep the power flowing when everything else shuts down.

    I might, there are a few companies on the net with info, my boss imported a kit from china several years ago, I got to look up comparable units here, the one he bought was only something like 500 KW not enough to do much.
    Keep in mind you will need a outbuilding for a battery room.

    I don't personally, have had a neighbor that runs his entire dairy farm with a wind generator. The place I work is seriously considering a wind turbine, partly because we can't get enough power to run another flour mill in that area

    they expect to pay around $125,000 for a wind turbine that will run the entire milling area, you know, cleaners, mills, baggers, the bakery, etc. A home unit should be considerably less. They must be efficient, or we wouldn't be looking at one.
