I have some friends that live in Kilgore, nice people, nice town, big enough to find something to do.
When we visit them we stay in Shreveport, LA, about an hour east at the casino.

I think that is one thing that I will be sure to do at least once.... I havn't been to a casino for a while. I thought about trying for a hog hunt on my second trip out there. I'll scope things out on the 1st trip.

My friend is with the Kilgore volunteer fire department and a land surveyor.
Are you going to teach something fire related?
He is also a gun enthusiast and I'm sure he would take you to the range.

No real help here - but many moons ago we used to play them in Football and they were a big rival. We called their cheerleaders the Kilgore fatlady Core[:D] That was about 31 years ago!!!

Phillip, funny you should mention Alcoa. I am going down to help set up the high speed line there. I work at the north plant(wide diameter)in Crawfordsville, and have been there for 24 yrs. Our plant is also getting ready to send another spout molder down sometime next month, but I will be training people on the wide diameter machine. Do you still work there?

phideaux4886, Not going down for fire related training, but would love to visit their department if your friend could arrange it.

The East Texas Oil Museum is in Kilgore. It's a college town, so there's always a little something going on, but most folks head up to Longview (a small city 12 miles Northeast) for any night life or entertainment.

Kilgore is in the piney woods of East Texas, and is a very pretty area. I'm 150 miles west of there.

Are there any good gun shops in the area? Where could I find out if there will be any guns shows?I'm guessing that I will be working 7AM-3 or 4PM so I will have lots of time in the evening and since the company is paying I don't want to sit at the hotel every night.

You need to get directions to the Country Tavern (NW - outside of town) and have a ice cold beer and some of their famous pork ribs....

What is the hog hunting like in the area? What would a non resident license cost? I've always wanted to go after hogs. It may need to wait till the longer trip though when I would have weekends off.

Hog hunting in the east Texas area is very good. There are some national forests an hour or so south and southeast of Kilgore (free hunting area), but most lands are privately owned. Non-resident hunting licenses are high (my opinion) - i think they are $300/year. There are probably several ranches in the area that would charge a minimal fee for hog hunting.
