Quitting Smoking
Well, I am finally going to do it. I have been limiting my computer time for now, as that is when I smoke the most, that, plus these 14 hr days I've been working. I set a goal, that when I reach the 4 week mark I will buy myself a new gun. I am using a patch plus a support group at work. There are 4 of us that are quitting together. Wish us luck

I decided it was time to quit smoking, I went to my doctor last week for an annual check up and discussed the smoking issue with him. He boasted about this new medication called "Chantix" which aids in quitting smoking and wrote me a prescription. The medication works by essentially preventing nicotene from attaching to the receptors in your brain; therefore, you do not get any sense of enjoyment from a cigarette. You take the medication for 7 days before you attempt to quit smoking. Today is day 8 for me, my first complete smoke free day in over a decade, and I must say, this medication is extraordinary and has made this transition very simple and painless.
I have read many posts from folks in here about quitting smoking and just wanted to share my experience.0 -
Good luck to you! Keep us posted on how it goes. I may want to try that stuff. I've been thinking about quitting lately. 0 -

I ALWAYS have known that I would quit, it just wasnt gonna be that day, or the next day, and most likely the day after that. Fact is, I was horrified of the thought of ACTUALLY quitting. The folks at Pfizer that make this stuff also enroll you in a program called "GET QUIT", they either call you or email you every day through the process and give you activities to do. Its the real deal, they even give you a toll free number to call if you get a craving where you can talk to a "real" person.0 -

Good start. Now, forget about the drugs, forget about the cigs. Whatever you are feeling will go away in a day or two. I quit cold turkey on January 4th of this year after 33 years. You have made the commitment, the rest is easy.0 -
After my old man's heart attack last March his doc put him on Chantix and he hasn't had a cig since. He's been smoking for over 40 years and was always unsuccesful at quiting. It's worked so well for him that mom and grandpa both used it to quit. 0 -
Good luck. Feels so much better in so many ways. 0 -
every person i know who has quit smoking for good used nothing more than will power. everyone i know who has tried to quit smoking though medication or all the other new techniques has failed. when YOU decide to quit you WILL quit. its called WILL POWER and its the strongest force in the world. 0 -
Yeah I did it that way, but I sure as hell would not discourage anyone from quitting any way they can.[:(!]
Guys (and gals) you really can do it, I promise. If I can quit (It has been 18 months) believe me anyone can quit. Never quit quitting. Pay attention to the craving and you will realize it never, ever goes away while you are smoking. Even when you are actually having a smoke the craving never goes away, just quits sreaming so loudly. After 4 weeks of not smoking the craving went away. You can do it, you can do it, you CAN do it.0 -
Way to go! Be sure to hang tough!! October will be 12 years for me and yeah I'm bragging!!!! If I did it anyone including you can do it! Started smoking when 10 or 11 and quit at 38. Did a group hypnosis session for the hell of it and it worked. 0 -

I quit 12 years ago, cold turkey. I had smoked for about 30 years up to three packs a day. Use anything that will help you lose the addiction.
Now, about this food addiction I acquired while quitting.[?]0 -
Chantix works. 0 -
BEEN 25 YEARS FOR ME just QUIT 0 -
well folks, 24 hours officially smoke free!!
Today I threw away every cigarette, lighter, and ashtray I own.
As long as I keep myself busy It's really no big deal. I've had cravings, but I just kind of "walk it off" by finding something to do real quick....like post on here. The Chantix, in my opinion, is remarkable.
For you others that have used Chantix, did you get any of the side effects? so far I have not experienced any at all.
Thanks everyone for the comments!!0 -

It is prescription.0 -
I quit out of fear, not will power. The desire to quit was there for years. Each pack was going to be the last.
I got pains in the right shoulder blade when I smoked heavily.
That was when they were $.33-.34 a pack.0 -
Quit April 1 1997 after 49 yr's
of up to 4 pk's a day.
My best buddy of 60 yr's just
died of lung cancer 12/02/2007
cause he wouldn't/couldn't quit.
SO QUIT_QUIT_QUIT_QUIT NOW!0 -
There is some question of this drug's safety. I would definitely do your own research, specifically about possible side effects and investigate other methods before doing it.
Personally i'd never take it.0
