I go along with the asteroid finish: One big space rock; let's say 10 kilometers in diameter, weighing in at a trim 500 to 600 billion kilos and moving fast should do the trick. While we will be going the way of the dinos (that will be one big BANG) the earth will shrug it off, come to grips with that giant pock-mark the asteroid left behind and in a hundred million years or so (just a lunch break length of time in our planets life span) it will be business as usual on earth. 0 -
Not anytime soon (in historical terms, not in astronomical), but probability is that it's going to be some sort of cataclysmic event such as a celestial body hitting Earth or super-volcano erupting, if that theory is true, or maybe akfanatik is right -- viruses will take over.
As for resources running out -- it won't be the end of it, unless of course it plays out that there'll be some sort of alternative energy source developed in which case the middle east will be in the same shape iraq is right now and one way or another there's a chance it'll start us and russians exchanging nukes (i am skipping the whole logical chain here, in two words -- islamists take care of a couple of cities in the US, we retaliate, russians, who are big supporters of iran and who wish for destruction of Israel, get involved and so on).
Who knows, maybe nothing will happen and humans will develop into some sort of highly evolved species in a few thousand years.
But of course, there's the chance of Skynet taking over and destroying the human race [;)]0 -
a big meteor isn't likely; it still wouldn't wipe out everybody. same for a super virus. it can be stopped.
I think what it would take to wipe out everybody on the planet would be a nuclear war, enough to make it not capable of supporting human life. that would probably also mean not capable of supporting any large mammalian life at all, due to lack of food. which would mean no plants, just some algae or whatever left over. which would have to be pretty bad.
that would have to be how it happens.
could it? it's possible, there are enough nukes to do that.
would people do that to each other? well, there was at one time the doctrine of "mutually assured destruction". would we actually have carried that out so far as to obliterate the planet? yes.
supposedly we are no longer prepared to play out that scenario... but you never know what's around the corner.
so that's how. that's the answer. it's only a matter of IF that comes about sometime in the future.
otherwise there will probably be some form or another of homo troglodyte crawling around on the earth until about 5 billion years from now when the sun turns into a red gas giant and turns the planet into a charcoal covered iron ball.0 -
Meteor is unlikely, however meteoroid or asteroid could easily kill most living stuff on the planet.
But yes, chances are there'll be some mutual elimination.0 -
