FFL??

How long after I sell a gun do I need to keep a copy of the FFL's licence that I sent the gun too??

    For a private sale each state is probably differant. Illinois is 10 years. If you are a FFL holder then I don't know.

    FFL holder is a minimum of 20 years for bound book records as well as 4473 forms. RJSnow

    Its always good to hold onto these types of things. If I were an individual that sold a firearm over the internet I would definately keep all my reciepts. Just label a manila folder "crap the ATF may be interrested in" and cram it full of anything you feel they would like to see. It SHOULD be officially kept record of on the FFL's end of things, but if the trail the powers that be starts with you....its good to have record of things. My rule has always been give them all the papers they can carry (even if it takes multiple trips to carry it all.) They came up with this silly system....let them deal with it.....sort it out....choke on it.

    You had no entitlement, as a non-licensee, for a copy of the recipient FFL's license in the first place.

    So you think that only FFL's should be able to sell on GB? Myself I think FFL's who are reluctant to send a copy of there FFL are mad because they think a private seller has cost them a sale.

    i for one, as it is a fed requirement that a firearm be sent ONLY TO A FFL HOLDER will not ship one without copy of said license.
    or at least a confirmed number/address of said ffl holder

    You better look up the regs again chief. Reading is fundamental.

    Transfers TO a licensee, require that the sender have a copy (or fax, scan/email etc..) of the recipient's FFL, IF the sender is a licensee. A non-licensee can use EZ check. That's why it exists.

    And I never said anything about GB or their policies. I'm just stating the facts of the rules.

    Don't put words in my mouth, that's not what I said.

    I have to send faxes and copies of my FFL all over the damn place, especially to non-licensees. Nothing aggravates me more than some dipwad non-licensee telling me he won't send a gun to me to transfer if I fax the license (that he's NOT entitled to anyway) or wont sign it in blue, green, red, purple, take-your-pick-cause-it's-not-required-anyway color ink.

    As I said some FFL's are mad because they are not selling their own inventory. Sounds like you are one of them. I am sure you are chargeing for receiving firearms so whats the problem? And as I asked before how could it hurt you for someone to have a copy of your FFL?

    You haven't a clue...

    An FFL in the hands of a non-ffl can be used fraudulently and often is. An individual is not required tohave a copy and can verify all FFL info on the ATF website.

    thanks vic. You nailed it.

    Has nothing to do with not selling stuff. Has everything to do with being able to account for firearms during compliance audits.

    ummm.... you would be sending it to the address on the ATF website... and that's the FFL... That's who you want to send the gun to... so what's your point?

    Yes. You are not required to have a copy nor is an FFL required to send you his license.

    Go to the ATF website with the FFL info (name, address, first 3 digits and last 5 digits of the license number). Punch it in and see if it comes up as a valid license at the correct address. Print it out for your records and send the gun out, legally.
