Da-Fence, yes the Border fence
The Secure Fence Act was passed and signed AND FUNDED for $800,000,000
last year for 854 miles of border fence in Oct.. Thats almost $1,000,000 per mile. Sounds like a beginning though. BUT, so far as as it happening, as of Aug. 10 2007 only 17.9 miles have been fenced. 422 miles of fence was supposed to be completed by May 30 2008. At this rate the 854 miles of fence MAY be completed in the next 20 years. But I have my doubts. Isnt Border Security one big joke?

if by border security you mean taxes & spending, then yes, it is one big joke.

Heck Bush was asking for volunteers to build the fence so that tells me he still doesn't want it.[V][xx(][:(][:(!] 0 -
isn't a bunch of gun man cheaper considering that most would do it for free 0 -
You could stack used containers 2 deep for half of that.
5280'/40'=132x2=264x$2000=$528,000.
Just make a road and start stacking.0 -
Heck if you stager them so you can access the doors you could rent storage space on this side and housing on the other. 0 -
The fence is a joke. By the time it's finished our capacity will be exceeded. 0 -
If you look carefully, you'll find it is a MANDATE ... with no completion date.[:o)] 0 -
People want talk about "a fence would cure everything" have NO CLUE as to the reality of the conditions on the border. There are MANY places where you can barely WALK there, much less build a fence!
How do fence off 100' canyons that are 20' wide? That get 50' of water/mud coming down them several times a year???
Those of you who yammer about how "the fence would stop people" just don't have a clue as to the reality of the situation.
Merc (who owns land nearly on the border, and actually KNOWS what is going on!)0 -
as big a farce as having the soldiers wander around the airports with NO weapons or ammo.....made the naive feel secure..... 0 -

Merc (who owns land nearly on the border, and actually KNOWS what is going on!) Merc, you raise a valid point but if we can send a man to the moon, we surely can find a way to secure the borders.
A bigger obstacle than wide canyons are the landowners themselves. I've heard excuses from "not on my land" to "how are my cattle going to access the Rio Grand for water?"
Border land owners need to look out for what's best for our country and not necessarily what's best for the aesthetics of their property.0 -
You could keep A-10s and old Cobras on station all day and night for that much money.
Napalm is a beautiful thing.

They will just stand on eachothers shoulders and jump de fence man. Wouldn't land mines be alot cheaper?[}:)] 0 -
If you guys get the chance, check out the book, "In Mortal Danger" by Tom Tancredo. He has more extensive ideas and answers on how to fix the problem than anybody I've ever heard and it goes way beyond building a fence.
Essentially, if you cut all the benefits, it wouldn't be worth their troubles of coming here. Until we give them a reason to not come here, they will keep coming.
Some may also be interested to read about how many incursions the Mexican military has made onto U.S. soil over the last ten years, escorting drug smugglers, while we stand by and watch.
The fence alone won't work. There's a story in the book about a border farm that has a fence going across the property. They destroy it and vandalize it as fast as they put it up. The families dogs would bark all night at the Mexicans running by. Eventually, the illegals poisoned their dogs. Then the family put up bars over their windows fearing for their own safety.
They vandalize water lines, power supplies, and leave behind so much garbage and drug paraphanalia that the cattle are getting killed from eating the plastic bags and garbage.
Amazing how a crisis this bad can simply be ignored. Bush is such the sympathizer.0 -
The only fence builders down here in Texas are illegals.... 0
