FFL copy - dealers won't provide it...........
I'm not a dealer, just an individual trying to sell old guns and acquire new ones on Gunbroker. So far I've shipped a total of 4 firearms with no problems. The buyer was able to provide the funds and a copy of the transfer dealers FFL. I had one deal fall apart when the buyer sent the money, but couldn't find a dealer who would provide me with a copy of his FFL. I even exchanged email with the dealer and he just would not provide his FFL to a non dealer. Is there a good reason for this?
I fell that it is necessary for me to keep hard records of who I ship firearms to and the FFL copy is my proof that I did everything within the law. The dealer in question, gave me the prefix and suffix of his FFL number and directed me to the ATF website to verify his license and it checked out. I just want to know why he guarded his FFL number because I never got the complete number. Dealers like this make it hard to sell on Gunbroker.
None of the local gun dealers will ship for me at what I consider a reasonable price and most just don't want to be bothered with it. A lot of them don't like Gunbroker when it costs them business. So I'm back to square one.

I am no dealer either, but if he really doesn't hold an FFL and you send it to him, then you have committed a felony. That is how I read the law.
That is too big of a risk for you to trust someone that you don't know.0 -
Its illegal if you sold him a gun without the FFL first, and many FFL's will not give their number out for this reason 0 -
"gave me the prefix and suffix of his FFL number and directed me to the ATF website to verify his license and it checked out. YOU (AN INDIVIDUAL) DO NEED TO SHIP TO A FFL, YOU DO NOT NEED A COPY OF HIS LICENCE. IF HE PROVIDED THE FIRST TWO NUMBERS (STATE) AND THE LAST 5 NUMBERS (HIS FFL #) YOU CAN VEREFY HIS STATIS AND ADDRESS AT THE ATF WEB SITE (GO TO EZCHECK). THIS IS ALL YOU NEED TO LEGALY SHIP TO HIM. 0 -

+1, you don't need a certified copy unless you are a licensee (ffl).

I want to know why SOME FFL dealers will not send me a copy of thier FFL to complete a transaction. What's the big deal? When I buy a gun on gunbroker, my FFL transfer dealer, either faxes it or writes stuff on the FFL he gives to me to mail.
I'm not so sure that I want to rely on the EZ check system the ATF provides. I may have to call them up. The bottom line is that I don't want a gun sale to come back and bite me in the ass due to haphazardly mailing a firearm to someone who refused to provide a FFL.
Once again, what's the big deal about sending a FFL to a private seller like me? I have too much to loose to do something stupid with it.0 -
It's simple. There are no requirements for a receiving FFL holder to provide a non-license holder with their number, as the non-license holder isn't going to record the transaction. There are actually a few responsibilities that you take on when circumventing an FFL just to save a few bucks. Sometimes it's more practical and safer to have the transfer handled by a licensed dealer. [;)] 0 -
I've heard of people impersonating FFL's by having a signed copy of a FFL license with them and buying guns with it at a gun show. 0 -

I do the same thing that this dealer did. You have absolutely NO NEED for a copy of my Federal Firearms License. I will ship out a copy to a private party with part of the number blackened out and with "File Copy Only" "Not to be used to Aquire Firearms" written across the license. That license enables the person presenting it to go anywhere and purchase a firearm...and that firearm gets recorded as going through that FFL holder's business...all this can be done without any kind of background check on the person presenting the license. Like I said before, you as a private individual do not need a copy of my license. All you need is the prefix and suffix of the license number to verfiy it through the ATF's website.
There are too many things someone could do with my license for me to let it get into a private party's hands...0 -
My FFL gives me a copy, upon which I write: For transfer of "name of gun" and serial # to "whompuss" making sure the writing defaces part of the FFL. It is up to the seller to get a FFL to ship to my FFL, who will not accept a gun from a non FFL. This has never caused a problem and my FFL does not have a clean copy floating around. 0 -
I put in my auctions that I am not a FFL just a guy selling off some surplus...if your transfer dealer will not provide me a copy of his license with the address I am shipping too dont bid,,I dont care if he e-mails it to me,or sends a copy with payment that has "file copy for transfer only" stamped all the way across it,,,I am not shipping a gun without knowing the address I am shipping too is a legit transfer dealer,,,if the winner can not get me a lic,,I will return their money minus GunBroker fee's 0 -

as stated before that's what the ATF E-Z-Check is for...0 -

A dealer can receive firearms at any address. We've had this debate many times...I can fully understand your point about wanting to make sure the firearm is going to a legit dealer though...0 -
I would use an FFL on my end if any of them were willing to do it. It seems that a lot of dealers don't want anything to do with you once they find out you buy and sell via Gunbroker. This has been my experience here in Roanoke, VA with at least one gun shop. Right now, I'm in a situation where I sold a handgun and the receiving FFL wants me to take the handgun to a FFL in my area to do an FFL to FFL transfer. It gets to a point of not being worth the hassle and wasted time. 0 -

MarinePride? You in the service? Use a base exchange shop for transfer... I ship many up to a base shop up in Norfolk...0
