    As alot of you know I am getting really close to getting out of the Navy and I have been pretty lucky and enjoyed the nearly ten years that I have been around. I was hoping that I would get into one last class that would be good for my resume before I got out. Aviation Safety Officer School. There were a few cool things about the opportunity to go to the school.

    1. My masters degree will be in aviation safety and aviation safety jobs will be the sort of thing I'm looking for once I'm out.

    2. I'm an enlisted guy and they have never had a single enlisted guy attend this school. There were alot of meetings and lots of favors had to be pulled to agree to let me in. Eventually they agreed to let me into the class that started today, 18 January. The school is about a month long. However because of the Christmas holiday an officer missed the December class, and needed to take the Janaury class and I lost my walk in spot. They have now offered to give me a scheduled spot in the March class, and i would be TAD there until my terminal leave started about a week before the class ended, and they would just let me finish the class while on terminal leave. That is all a pretty good deal.

    The bad news is my younger brother returns to Ft. Bragg from Afghanistan (where he has been for a year) the day the class starts, and I was planning on going up there for about a week and be there for his return home.

    So do I go to the class and catch up with my brother later (and he's coming down to Florida in April) or do I miss the only opportunity I have at this class and welcome my brothere home. I know right away he would say go to the class, but I'm not sure if I want to do that, with him expecting me to be there, I should be there.

    Just one thought. If some people pulled strings to get you in the class. If you ever need more strings pulled again, they will probably not be as willing.

    You're right that is tough. Can you call and explain this situation to the teacher and get a feel for His/Her feelings? That might help. It is Afghanistan and not Iraq. I missed my brothers wedding because of work and he could'nt care less.

    Opportunity is looking you right in the face. Get in touch with your Brother and see if he can come to your location. Explain it all to him how lucky you are to get this chance. He should understand and respect you for it.

    ...Tough choice...but your brother would probably understand(?).
    I don't suspose at this time there is anyway to get in touch w/your brother if he's that short and being processed?

    ...As close as it appears ya'll are, I think he'd commpletely understand...[;)]

    That's a nasty choice to have to make. If this was your last chance to see him before he went overseas, I think the answer would be different. Since he is coming home and you can catch him a bit later, I'd say you'd better finish your own opportunities if you can. I'm willing to bet that a guy who has been where he was understands taking advantage of something while it is there.[:)]

    knowing the kind of person you are & the head on your shoulders, I am sure you will make the correct diss. Let your self make that choice & then NEVER second guess it. It will be the right choice.

    When I joined the Navy my uncle who was a retired sailor told me "Don't pass up any school for any reason, even if it's just firefighting school." I followed his advice and I think it was good advice. This school looks a lot better on paper than firefighting school. I'd try to get word to my brother one way or another, maybe through another relative, but I'd take the school. Believe it or not, CivLant has considerable respect for service schools. Even if you could get a similar school after discharge, it will cost you.

    As dlrjj said, it would be different if he was GOING over seas. As a Soldier, himself, I'm sure he'll understand.

    Take the school. I can't believe they are sending you without a service remaining requirement. Most of the Army schools I went to required you to have "X" number of months or years remaining upon graduation BEFORE you could attend.
