I saw that same thing in War of the Worlds.

Don't worry, my understanding is that vaporization is painless.

Getting hit by lightening isn't painless. Or at least a near miss isn't. 6 years I had just purchased my current pickup truck. Drove it home in thunderstorm.
About 1 hour after arriving home, I was out sitting in the truck getting familiar w/the stereo. The storm had passed and the sun was shining. Could still see the dark clouds off to the distant west and hear the occasional rumble of thunder. Had the driver side door open and one bare foot hanging out, dangling just off the ground.
All of a sudden it happened. The best way I can describe it in my experience is that it was like touching an electric fence. Only more intense. Didn't last long and as soon as it was over, I knew what had happened. I jumped out of the truck and ran for the house. Met my wife and daughter coming out on the front porch to check on me. They said the flash lit up the house and the thunder rattled the walls. It was clear that lightening had hit in the immediate vacinity.
I don't know if it hit the truck or what. I never saw the flash or heard the report. But I'm sure that sitting in the truck saved my life. I was shaken, but apparently unharmed. Except that from that day on, my hands have grown increasingly numb. I can still use them. But it has severely impaired my guitar playing. And I have trouble w/things like starting nuts on bolts, or closing a zip-lock bag. I thought it was carpel tunnel. Doc says it isn't. Possibly nerve damage from the lightening.

Fatstrat: Saved by 'the angle of the dangle!' ... fer sure!

A little closer to the ground and you'd be with the angels now.

That happened to a friend when he was younger except he was in a
dune buggy - jumped from the ground to his elbow. The lightening
experts said it was 'unusual' - Todd said the pain was a tad beyond
    'unusual!'

    Glad you're OK.

I can tell you this much. Homeboy be sceert of lightening. I have a whole new respect for it. That lightening bolt had to travel many miles from the storm clouds to where I was. There was blue sky ABOVE me!

I miss the lightning from my youth on Lake Erie. I always swore that I would retire to a place with lots of lightning.

Came to Orygun. Too damn much rain for there to be ANY lightning.

    Rats.

I wonder where the place is that has the most lightning in the U.S.??

    Loko: Very cool pictures.

Fatstra: That's an amazing story. Sucks about your hands.

Doug: try CO, I watch lightning storms almost daily, last night i thought the building is gonna crack from thunder.

And has anyone ever seen so called "ball/globe lightning"? That's one tripping thing to see and very rare.

I lived in S. Florida for awhile and there was a lot of lightning. Also, a lot of heat, humidity, and old folks(I are one of them, now).

thats my view to the left from my computer,so..... i can see varmints coming across the field and other creatures as well, after these two strikes my wife starts yelling at me to shut off the computer before it gets fried,[never mind me lol] it hit there several times within a min or two so i just held on to the camera and set the shutter speed up, it would have been better but it takes to long to repower my flash back up, I rode the 4 wheeler over there earlier and looked around as there is quite a few big chesnut oaks on that ridge but didn't see any that were damaged it must have just struck the ground,Loko[:D] btw, it thundering now maybe I will get some more today.......from inside the house[:D]

Very cool! I've been close to the receiving end myself. Out in a boat on, yes, Lake Erie. Storm rolled over before I could get out of its path so I just pulled the throttle back and headed into the waves. A bolt hit about 10 yards or so off the bow; how it missed the boat I don't know. I was seeing the ghost image for about a day after. Now in THEORY I think the grounding system on the boat SHOULD take that kind of zap and not hurt passengers but I'd sure as heck hate to try it!
