Shipping Ripoff

Some people/places charge for their or their employee's time in delivering, wrapping, etc. They are just directly passing the cost on to the customers rather than hiding it in the sale price like most do.

If you don't like doing it that way then shop elsewhere. But like you said, this was the cheapest price...

I'm talking about an in store pickup I drive over and get it and they charge me 5.00 extra for that. It seems a little high if you ask me to charge that to not pack and ship something

Their profit was in the shipping. No shipping no profit.

    Be my guess.

Its $5.00......if that is going to make or break them...give them the $5.00. Its not like they came knocking asking for spare change. Its a business. Who knows how they figure everything. Just play by their rules or don't....its your call.

As I said They were selling a bunch of tapes of which I was needing one. The price was more than I wanted to pay for 1 tape but there were some other good movies in the lot so I checked them out. before I bid. The part I have a problem with is paying them for something they did not have too do. ie shipping. I do not have a problem with people putting reasonable charges to cover additional costs but when they charge you dtoi do nothing I think it is a ripoff. It would be like charging someone to come into the store and buy from you.

but they still have to pay the auction fees. like the other poster said, would you rather they be up fron about it or hide it in the base price for the item

The auction fees are a % of the final bid. They are not part of the shipping costs. The seller is supposed to pay them not the buyer. They are not added to the cost like a premium at some live auctions. The auction site does not get a cut of the shipping and handling. Like I said I have no problem paying shipping and handling when they actually incur a cost but to pay them so they dont have to ship it seems wrong. But as I said I did not bid because this and won't bid in their other auctions.

but does the auction costs not come under "handling" to me, handling covers the time anf effort necessary to produce, monitor and finalize the auction, package the material and go to the shipping center. shipping relates onky to the actual costs form the carrier.

it is my feeling that if the seller wants to impose a fee for live pickup, it is fair. if you feel otherwise, simply dont do business with anyone who has that policy.

and the central theme at play here i think is that at least they were up front about the fee and didnt lie to you and roll it into the final price. its a fair fee in my book...

The shipping ripoff is my biggest complaint with online auctions. I know how much it costs to ship stuff and it irks me to see someone trying to get $30-35 to ship a rifle. Don't they know most people add that to the cost of the piece and bids are accordingly lower? I have been known to gripe to the seller (before bidding) about their overcharges. If a seller acts huffy, I don't bid cause I figure he's not customer friendly.

let me put it in a way you can understand if you want the thing go buy it if not don't its there business. i see auctions all the time that i don't agree with. i don't come on here and gripe and whine i just don't bid on there auction. if you have a problem with it email the seller and tell them they lost a sale because of it.

I find it humorous that you're selling a rifle for more than double Blue Book value (based on $195 value at 90% condition) but you're quibbling over five lousy bucks! [;)]

Tapes? [?] As in VCR Tapes? [:0] Uhh.. you do know this is the 21st century, right? [:p]

And before you ask, YES, I did THROW AWAY (or gave away) all of my VCR tapes shortly after I got my DVD player. I can't remember when I got my first DVD, it was too long ago. [:D] [;)]

Blue book prices are a joke. When is the last time you saw Remington 721 go for 150.00? . In fact a lot of weapons in the Blue Book are so under priced and others are so over priced as to be laughable. A lot of very rare guns are under priced in your beloved book because they have no sales record to go by. The values in the book come from people telling the author what something sold for. If the dealers who provide the info to him don't sell one the prices don't go up. No information no price increase. The price they have is probably based on a single sale 15 or 20 years ago. As for my whining about the 5.00 blow it out your a55. The only reason I knew about the charge is I asked them before I bid. So I could buy there tapes drive 25 miles and pay them 5.00 extra so they don't have to pack ship and otherwise exert them selves and drive 25 miles back home. I say paying someone extra to save them time and headache is a ripoff.

Shipping cost topics always amuse me when I hear people talk about what they think something costs to ship. Don't get me wrong, charging for a service you are not recieving is rediculous.

Just so some of you know, shipping cost have increased dramatically for guns. A handgun will cost from $35 to $45, and more to ship via UPS Next Day Air. That is the only alternative for non-ffls. A long gun will cost about $25 to $30 to ship vis USPS. I know this because I have had to ship these items.

When one figures in the time it takes to drive to a central UPS shipping location, possibly 20 miles or more, and to package it so these shippers will not damage it during shipping, shipping and handling costs add up.

I don't argue about shipping costs usually but paying them to not do something is where I draw the line.

agreed you should have enough sense to hide the cost in the product and not sound stupid by asking me to pay an extre fee for MY TIME AND FUEL TO COME TO YOUR STORE AND PICK IT UP MYSELF!

In an auction it is hard to hide the cost inside athe price unless you set a reserve or raise the starting price. But they set a no reserve and a low price to grab bidders. If you tack it on the shipping who cares. Well for one thing some auction sites have rules about excessive shipping charges because it is fee avoidance. They lose out on their cut when the sellers set low buy it now prices and taack on high S&H prices to make it up.

    from dictionary.com:

Handling-of or pertaining to the process of moving, transporting, delivering, working with, etc.

preparing, monitoring and completing a sale falles under this definition. either pay the money or dont but quite complaining.

They pay workers for not working, they pay farmers for not farming, what's wrong with paying shippers for not shipping? (Actually the original went "what's wrong with paying for fertilizer tanks that aren't there?" but you have to be over a certain age to know what that means.)

I'm sorry you felt you had to resort to vulgar insults but, if that's how you are, so be it. I respect all people's opinions, including yours. My point was simply that a seller has a right to offer their item for whatever they want, regardless of whether it's "rare" or desirable (which are not necessarily the same). Personally, I don't know of any Universal firearm that's ever been considered rare or desirable but that's just my opinion. Someone else might come along and feel differently. You apparently feel the same way or you wouldn't be asking so much for it. In the same vein, a buyer has the right to accept or refuse an item or the additional charges that accompany the sale price. That's the very foundation of the "free enterprise" system. However, although you have so graciously invited me to "blow it out my a55", I will respectfully decline your invitation.

...Shipping costs are, whatever the seller wants them to be, and the buyer is willing to pay. Almost always the shipping, not "shipping and handling" costs are higher than the actual cost.

I like it when the "shipping" charge for a set of ANY kind of 1911 grips is $5 bucks or more inside the lower 48, bugnuts! $3.50 or less will pay for the materials and shipping on these grips, minus ins. of a buck and change.

Factory rubber Colt grips w/a $5 shipping charge[:0]...ivory grips dropped at my door WITH ins....$3.50.[^]

If the shipping cost looks WAY high, I will either em the private seller...which in most cases the seller does bring the shipping cost in line...or I don't buy the item.

$35+ for handguns is excessive in most cases...they can and are shipped for way less. Last hand gun I bought off GB (not long ago) was insured and shipped in the original Colt box...$18 bucks.
I have no probelm with anyone charging whatever they feel is good for them, going rate...no problem...twice the going rate, I wont buy from them, simple.

I think wipala is saying is that what he encountered is like going to the grocery store and then at check out they add $$$ "oh, this charge is because we did NOT have to deliver".

Maybe a new trend, just charge an entrance fee into a store you want to patronize...[;)]

You said that there were 25 movies and you only wanted one and maybe a couple more.
When you get to the store see if they will be willing to keep the other 20 movies you won in exchange for the 5.00 fee.

A non-licensed individual must ship a handgun through a contract carrier like UPS or FedEx. You are required by law to declare the item as a firearm. These companies will only ship firearms via overnight shipping. The last handgun I sold and shipped through FedEx cost me $47. If you have a dealer ship it though the USPS they will charge you the actual shipping charge and a fee on top of that.

I got a call from a guy today who wanted to know what I charged to do a transfer. I told him he could buy any one gun up to $1000 in value for a transfer fee of $20 and $10. to the state for his background check. He responded it would be cheaper to buy the gun in a local store. You can't please some people, even if you sold for 25 cents profit, they'd offer a dime instead.
