NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... am sitting here less than 48 hours of major fix on right shoulder... had bone spur chew up tendon then injury was worse than MRI showed....chronic irritation aggravated by accident trauma & full meal deal...private pay, no insurance and months of PAINFUL healing...check it out & you might get by lucky with a easier fix

i guess it all depends how bad it is torn. my dr.said i had a mild injury and if i didn't abuse it that it would heal on it's own. so far so good, it seems to be getting better. but i can tell when i over do it.

No. Will not heal by themselves. My doc says most folks have some kind of a tear. Some just worse than others.

...No. I tore mine years back and lived w/it for awhile until I got tired of the limited motion of my right arm. Had it whacked on and wasn't bad at all, left the hospital that same afternoon...aches with the winter months and the cold fronts but I have about 90% range of motion back...I can live w/that...[;)]

depends on if is an acute tear, or chronic tear, and which of the four muscles are involved, i tore mine doing heavy bench presses, i got a new Olympic bench, and one day made a mistake of having to wide of a grip, and it was only 3/4 of my max, i healed it through exercises, took along time but i could tell within a few weeks, i still can't go heavy on a bench anymore, but even with surgery i wouldn't be able to ether

will not heal...surgery is not fun either. Get it done sooner rather than later.

I had a should full of bone spurs, got to the point I couldn't sleep, hurt 24/7 BAD. It was a REAL long healing process after surgery. I slept in my recliner for 6 weeks. It's 98% now, best thing I ever did getting it fixed. I do 50 pushups every morning to keep it limbered up. Dave

There is a difference between an injury and a tear. The only way anyone can tell you if there is a tear is having an MRI. You can have pain for a long time and continue to make it worse until you have a stretch that turns into a tear. It takes a long time to heal. But in my case I have torn both and they were bad. I have a friend who has torn the same one twice, second time completely severed. I have pain every day 6 years after surgery but the pain from the tear was unbearable. I have been told that it compares to childbirth. I have more sympathy for what a mother goes thru believe me.Good luck with yours.

Because I have an implanted defibrillator,an MRI can't be used, and a CT scan won't help. So they had to use X-Ray with an impermiable dye to see what they could see. I didn't like the results, 'cause the tears weren't apparent.

I am so sick of having so much pain, everywhere.

Doug, has your Ortho told you that you have a tear or tendinitis? I developed Rotator Cuff Tendentious some years back and that is one SLOW, PAINFUL self healing injury. You know you are in trouble when it hurts to pull a blanket over you. The quick fix is a shot of Cortisone in the joint. My Ortho said that he was going to operate if I went that route. I opted to just wander around with a useless limb for a year.

Best of luck for a speedy recovery!!!!

Go back to the ortho. sooner it gets fixed, easier the recovery will be.

I tore mine back in 1974 while pitching in a high school baseball game. I went in the army in 1976, and it didn't affect my joining active duty. For many years it has been OK as long as I don't over work it. I never had it fixed, and it has given me some problems on and off every since.

Generally speaking, any sort of ligament or tendon, if torn all the way through and detached from the bone, will not heal on its own. The surrounding musculature may take up the slack, depending where it is, but will always be a bit weak.

I tore the ligaments on my ankle a few years ago- 2 of 3, the 3rd was badly strained. 6 weeks in a cast. They said the surgery was my call- if I didn't mind having only a 75% range of motion in that ankle and never did anything extreme I wouldn't need it and indeed, I don't. I can jog on it and that's the limit of what I need it to do. Curiously skiing doesn't hurt at all- those boots hold your ankles pretty much rigid. But it IS still weak compared to the other ankle and I suspect a rotator cuff would be much the same story.
