Cheap Mauser build, is it possible?
Hello to all, (this is my first post)
I just received my C&R a few days back, and have been looking at the relic auctions. I have always wanted to build a mauser, but have heard a lot of horror stories of cost. I would like the gun to be in 308, 30-06, or 223. I have been looking at many different sites to find good prices on parts. (barrel, thumbhole/sporter stock, bolt, and trigger) I dont mind buying used parts. The thing that i am unsure of is how much a gun smith would charge to put the barrel on and headspace, etc. Any mauser building advice would be apreciated? Thanks

I used to do that - not very cost effective anymore - especially
what you end up with ... compared with what you can buy off
the retail gunracks, today.
BUT, it is a lot of fun and with some bucks it's still pretty simple
to do.

FIRST, WELCOME ABOARD. RIGHT NOW THE ONLY DECENT MAUSERS OUT THERE (SURPLUS MARKET) ARE THE UGO'S (24/47'S/ M-48/M48a'S). YOU CAN BUY ONE WITH A DARK BORE FOR <$100. A GOOD 'SMITH WILL CHARGE $50/100 TO INSTALL AND HEADSPACE A THREADED/SHORT CHAMBERED BARREL. THE REST IS SIMPLE ADDITION AS TO WHAT PARTS YOU WANT TO BUY AND FINISH. STAY WITH THE .30/06 HEAD SIZE IN A MAUSER (OR MAGNUM), .223 SIZE IS VERY DIFFICULT. 0 -
thanls for the advice, 30-06 was what i was thinking or 308. Cause surplus ammo can be had a lower price. I have a 1903 turk that i have never been able to feed ammo into. The bullit does not go in all the way and bolt will not close all the way. I have heard they are junk, but bought anyway. Maybe headspacing? ill look for the yugo's. thanks again 0 -

Just a wild guess, but are you trying to place the cartridge (a bullet is the part that goes down range) into the chamber and than closing the bolt? Or are you placeing the cartridge down into the magazine and than running it into the chamber with the bolt?
The first methiod works on a push feed action (think Rem 700) but requires some extractor manipulation on a Controled Round Feed system (which the Mauser is).
The second methiod is the easiest way to feed a Mauser style rifle (including the CRF Winchester M-70's)0 -
One thought on the turk would be to have a smith check it and ream it out to 8mm or 8mm-06, if indeed it is just a tight headspace problem. 0
