Need Advice on .22LR?
My nephew Austin turned 9yrs old last September, I want to take him and let him buy his first .22 Rifle that he can keep at home. My sister and brother in law are ok with it, I bought a plastic case for a rifle a while back and it will stay in there with the trigger lock and locks on the case. It cant be a Ruger 10/22 because Ive already bought him one for when he gets older. I havent been in the market for a .22 in a long time, I dont want a semi-auto to start him on. What are the good .22 Rifles on the market now? I appreciate your advice.

Just a thought....I bought a used 10/22 stock and cut it down to fit my sons when I was teaching them to shoot. When then grew beyond it, we simply put the original full size stock back on the 10/22.

Marlin makes a couple of good bolts, and there is always the 39A. other wise you can pick up a good used one reasonable. 0 -
I bought my dad a Henry .22 lever action for his 60th birthday (He's always wanted a lever action but isn't into guns so I thought I would help him out). My 11 year old nephew loves to shoot it. I got it for $220. I think it would make a good gun for your nephew. They also make a youth version. 0 -
I go along with chrishiher and ljwrench. If you get him a good lever action, say a Marlin, it could very well be his favorite gun for the rest of his life. 0 -
if it can't be a 10/22 or any semiauto, those old marlin bolt actions are pretty nice. 0 -
Find a decent Ithaca 49. It has the look of the classic lever action, but, is a single shot. A kid who gets his experience with a single shot will likely be a much better and safer shooter. The 49 is a bit smaller than a full size rifle, but, not too small to be appreciated and used by an adult. Also, there's nothing wrong with buying a used rifle; not everything has to be new. 0 -
Walmart sells a savage youth model bolt action 22 for less than 140 bucks. 0 -
My son's first one was a Cricket. It is a single shot bolt. Nice shooting little gun. 0 -
I 2nd that about the levers. I have 2 mod 9422 Winchesters, They are awesome guns But a little pricey. 0 -

The one my son is holding is a Crickett. I got it at walmart for $99. Great shooting little gun and has a bolt lock built into it. I have been real impressed with it. The also come in other colors as you can see by the pink one, the also have blue & green. But walmart is the only place I found them with the bolt lock. 0 -
At 9, I would go with a youth model, like the CZ Scout or Savage youth, or one of the other major brands. Sure, he'll outgrow it, but you'll have it around for the next kid who wants to learn to shoot. And the next. When you finally sell it decades down the road, you'll get more than you paid for it. What other purchase will do that?

I'll go ahead and break from the pack. Buy him a nice old Winchester Model 67. For about $100 you can have a nice shooter that will only increase in value. 0 -

First rifle? Get him a Marlin 15Y or 15YN. Single shot, bolt, scaled down for a young'un. Accurate, reliable, well made. One that will not only outlast him, but that he can give to HIS first son. 0 -
I think the Henry model H001Y Levergun would be a great starter gun. I started out with a Ithaca model 72 Levergun. Both guns are just about alike and are resonably safe as well. 0 -
I think lever guns are the best way to go ... reliable, pretty fast shooting, and fun.
I'd go with the Winchester Model 9422 or the Marlin 39A. I love mine, and I'm still a kid![:D]0 -

i have a Marlin 39A that my Dad traded for in 1957, i was 10 yrs old
it is still in good shape, has probably had more LRHP through it than
i could count, is still as accurate as i am. HARD TO BEAT.0 -
I purchased a couple (over several months) of a Rossi single shot .22 with a .410 or 20 gauge barrel for about $109.00 at Dick's Sporting Goods on sale. Seems like a great deal to me. 0 -

You might want to hold off for a little while. I was talking to Gary Anderson at a CMP Master Instructor clinic in January and he said the CMP is working on obtaining some lighter youth oriented target .22's rifles to support smallbore activity. The 52D's, 40X's, 541T's and 513T's are all great rifles but TOO heavy for the younger shooters. Try to visualize something like the Savage-Anschutz target rifle that came out in the late 70's. Beautiful rifle and absolute bargain basement price for a rifle that can take a kid to small bore distinguished status. Add a couple of spacers and they can still shoot it in their late teens competitively. Incidently some of the Savage-Anschutz rifles can still be found for around $300-$375.....count on the lower figure if they guy know you are buying it for a kid. Beach 0
