Advice for a newbie.
Not me. But my daughter who works at Wal Mart has been transfered into the Sporting Goods Dept. And her manager has suggested to her that she familiarize herself w/the firearms/calibers and ammo that she will be selling. So as to as best as possible be able to answer customer questions.
I could help her, but unfortunantly our work schedules are such that I rarely see her for more than a few minutes at a time.
Does anyone know of any websites on the various rifle calibers that she could study to learn what caliber is best suited for which hunting/shooting applications?

I feel bad for your kid, Typical Wal-Mart move...put someone in an area they know nothing about. Wal-Marts in my area do not sell firearms of any kind or ammo for that matter. I wish I could help, but depending on the variety of guns and ammo, most spend a lifetime learning about them. Good luck to her..oh by the way, are they paying her to "familiarize" herself. My daughter is 21 yrs old and has worked @ W-M for about 2 years. W-M has been very good to her and has recognised and rewarded her good work habits by "reportedly" grooming her for a manager position. In doing so they are giving her experience in every Dept. So far Sporting Goods and Automotive are the only ones she hasn't worked in and mastered.
She wasn't forced to work in Sporting Goods.
But I do agree that there could be better training than suggesting she learn this stuff on her own.0 -

I think the best thing to do is spend some spare time crawling through google searches.

They've been doing the same thing with my mother in law, she still thinks after years of promises that they will one day promote her. Dangled carrot..........0 -

One thing she should know, is local game laws and federal laws. Like the fact that you need to use steel shot for waterfowl.
I was buying some steel shot to go duck hunting, and one of the sporting goods emplyees was helping anther guy look for shells. This guy had a couple of ten round boxes of turkey loads and ask me if what I was buying was good for ducks or what he had. I told him that it is federal law that you have to use steel shot for ducks. The employee looked at me perplexed and asked his coworker if she knew that and she didn't. I forgot to tell him along with the required state migratory stamp(PA) a federal stamp was also needed.
The problem Wal-mart has is that they get somebody trained at a position like sporting goods and then they move them, and it starts all over again0 -

Explain to her that the simple words.."I don't know..but I will find out" does a long way.
You better get her a couple subscriptions to Guns and Ammo and Shooting Times...because right after they come out, the good little sheep will flock to her counter. asking about the latest and greatest.
A current Gun Digest and Shooters Bible, as pointed out above, will give general information on many different rifles.0 -

It is to late for this hunting season but I would have here either go through a hunter ed course or try to get the material for your state. A lot of good firearm/hunting information at the hunter Ed classes 0 -
Since WalMart only sells a limited amount of firearms only in a few different calibers and gauges. Have her compile a list of what they normally sell and study those, and familiarize her on the uses of what they sell. There are so many calibers out there that she wouldn't need to know about, so why try to cram that knowledge into her brain. 0 -

That is what separates the men from the boys..or, in this case...merely a slip of a girl totally ignorant about guns..'whyinell is she back in Sporting Goods, ANYWAY'...OR a young lady that is sharp as a tack.0 -

Wal-Mart employees don't get paid much more than minimum wage. So when I go there my expectations of them are very low. But fortunately I have much more firearm knowledge than the average Wal-Mart customer or employee. 0 -

Anyone looking to buy ammo at wal-mart should know more then a little girl. If not they shouldn't be buyin'. Same thing for guns if that wal-mart still sells em'.

"Steel shot" is not required for waterfowl. "Non Toxic" is i.e. steel, bismuth, etc.........
She should read the state and fed. hunting regs that are on the counter at most Walmarts and she'll learn alot as she goes along. Good luck to her.0 -

when we train salespeople...the first rule is to take interest in the customer's question, ie listen to them. If they want a box of shells, and know what they want, give them the shells, ask if they need a range bag or shooting vest, and let them go.
If the question is more substantial, then take an actual intrest in answering completely. It is the part of selling that constitutes WORK!0 -
