Price of .22 Ammo
DAMN!! Just Damn! I dropped by my local gun store yesterday to pick up a brick of CCI .22s because I am going to take my two granddaughters out shooting this morning. No brick anymore. Just sold in 100 rd boxes. 1000 rds would cost me $32.50. $32.50? I knew the price of ammo has been going up, but on .22s? And this much? Gouging at it's best!! This is worse then gas. I told him that even with my usual 40% discount that would be too much. Then, he wanted to know what 40% discount and I told him the one he should be giving to anyone who buys anything there......of course, he didn't understand. [:)][:)] I didn't buy the bullets. I'll go somewhere else. I always try to support the gunshops, but when things get to this point, it's a matter of self preservation. [}:)][;)]

My Federal bulk is still running $10. for 550 at Wally World.
Good enough for plinking and most small game hunting in my experience. Double the price it was 10 years ago tho.
Unless you're target shooting or have a picky gun, I've never understood the rational to buy the more expensive .22 ammo.
Over the years, I've shot them all. But except for special applications, IMO Federal bulk works best for me in all respects.0 -

This is only a thought, but the Retailers know were stocking ammo and they see a chance to make a small profit. On .22LR there's not much profit to be made at those prices. I would not do it if I had a gun shop, but thats why I dont and could not stay in business. 0 -
I bought a brick of 550 at Wal-Mart on Friday and paid $9.83. Not a bad price.
My 9mm 100 rounds was about $15 which is good too.

So the bad gun shops are making all this extra profit because of shooters desires to stock up??? Where have you been? THE PRODUCT COSTS MORE! The US Dollar is weak! Metals are high! Fuel is high! That's why the price has risen!0 -
the other sneaky trick retail is doing is keeping the price the same, but lowering quantities per pack. you see this a lot in grocery stores.[;)]
it makes them look good, but really theyre scalping you...like everyone else.

Excuse me, but it's 2016. The dollar is strong and killing U.S. exports. Generally, the world economy is in the tank, especially China, and the cost of metals is way down (maybe not as low as it was 15 years ago, but much lower than say 2008 before the crash) and the cost of fuel is as low as it has been in how long?
The reason .22LR is so expensive is simple. The manufacturers can't make it fast enough to satisfy the hoarders. Some of us are doing it to the rest of us. Simple supply and demand. I have seen .22LR at stores for less than $.03 a round but at the local gun show this weekend not one box less than $.10 a round, and many much more than that.
When shooters stop hoarding the price will come down everywhere. Simple as that. Problem is I don't see that happening anytime soon. So it will be hit and miss at local stores. I will not buy from the gougers and don't need to 'cause I got mine years ago. But if I see some at a good price, I'll buy it and stash it away. And it's exactly that thinking that will keep the price high.0 -

Around and around and around on this. It isn't buying causing the shortage. If it was buying then the stores would still be getting their usual deliveries and all of it would be scooped up. That is not the situation. Every store owner and manager I have spoken with says he is getting less than 5% of usual supply. This is a supply shortage, not a demand issue.
Either far less ammo is being produced, or it is not being sent to retail sellers. If that is the case then I have no idea where it is going.
The day before the Sandy Hook shooting my Walmart sold a brick for about $21. Now it's $27...when they have any...which is very rarely.
PS: CCI is always the most expensive brand.
I don't know how long this will continue or where the prices will eventually settle. But it's been going on for three years and it's ridiculous.
On a related subject, powder and primers for reloading have also been MIA for the same time period. I've paid $34 for one pound of powder and primers have been as high as $50. On Saturday at a local show several dealers had cases and cases of primers. All $29-$34 so that situation seems to be improving. Still no powder and nobody sells lead bullets any more.0 -

Since this old thread has been revived I'll chime in. By selectively buying online, I'm still getting Rem Golden Bullets for less than $.06/round, Federal 325 packs for $.06/round and Mini Mags for just over $.08/round, and these prices are for delivery to my front door. 0 -
I'm confused.... I have not seen a brick (500 rnds) for under $15 in at least 15 years in my area.......... I have seen 300 pks cheaper but not a full brick. I won't buy at .10 or more a round. I can load 38s cheaper than that.... .06 and below is my "buy" price. 0
