    That's insane all right.

That's how cops get dead - fast.

    He's outnumbered 2:1 with two
hostile opponents. I lost count of
the times he turned his gaze/back
    on #1. He's lucky neither had a
handgun. We've lost many a cop
like that. He needed backup as
soon as he started taking crap
from the driver - to let both out
of the car to confront him ...
    unbelievable!

What's he doing wrong? Is there some sort of practical training regarding this sort of situations?

Here's a pointer - if you let BOTH out of the car - "ON THE GROUND NOW! FACE DOWN HANDS OUT! SPREAD'EM!"

    ... is that a clue?

    OR

... just let them walk around in back of you, etc.?

Are you out of your mind. He showed more than enough restraint.

When the shovel came out I would have shot the guy swinging it.

The cop did make a mistake by not calling for emergency back-up. Never try to arrest anyone without back-up.

He did not maintain his cool (if he ever had it). He let himself be lead into an arguement and took too much personal. He let the situation escalate. Shame on him, the people that hired him, and the people that trained him.

Alright, the point of this video was not the actions of the police officer.

If a cop "maintains his cool" as you say, it will nearly always be percieved as weakness. I have had the same thing happen to me. If someone gets in your face, you get right back in theirs.

The only thing he did wrong was to not call for back-up when things started going down hill. When that mouthy SOB started getting in his face, the guy should have been tazered. When the older guy went for the shovel it would have been time for deadly force.

Laredo, I just don't know how to respond to that.

The one Mex who was huffing and puffing should've been tased right then.

It's called "threatening and intimidating" and is more common, IME, in blacks and hispanics who are trying to psyche themselves up to do something really stupid and inspire those with them to follow along.

    Like a pufferfish.

He had a good oportunity and reason to cuff the 2nd guy when he was patting him down. He waited to long. He also should have called backup as soon as the second guy came around the front of the truck.
