Animal Care Officer Attacked by Pit Bulls
(Richland County) - County officials say a Richland County Animal Care officer was attacked by two pit bulls Monday afternoon.
Officials say it happened at a location at 325 Pintail Lane in Northeast Richland County.
The officer was responding to a call requesting that the department pick up a stray puppy that was being fenced in his yard with his two pit bulls. Officials say when the officer approached the home, the dogs broke free from their chained leashed and attacked.
EMS treated the employee and took him to the hospital. He's since been released.
DHEC has been notified of the incident and Richland County Animal Care is investigating. The animals are currently in the custody of Animal Care.
The owner faces more than $4,000 worth of citations for owning dangerous and vicious animals and at-large animals, and more charges could be pending.
Officials say the standard operating procedure is that all Animal Care Officers use a catchpole when responding to an incident and approach the animal with caution. At this time, indications show the officer followed department protocol.

Actually that is not that uncomon. I've see rotties leashed with 3/8" chain all the time. Generally it is the connector on either end of the chain or the collar or D ring on the collar that breaks. The one that got me broke it's heavy duty collar which I was told had been reinforced at a leather shop. That dog made a running start against the chain and I wouldn't doubt if it didn't hit the end of the chain with a couple thousand pounds of force.0
