Deer whistles?
For the car bumpers, do the realy work or just a gimmic?

Works good and then you hit a deer. Nope they dont from what ive heard. During the rut noise is the least of a deer's worries. They chaseing eachother looking for a peice. 0 -

I think they work. I was looking at them in the store and there wasn't a deer closer than a couple miles. 0 -
they work, but like anything else they are not 100%, ask any cop in rural areas why they have them on their patrol cars 0 -
Our local Sheriff's Department tried them out a few years ago. They still hit several deer during that year. Not sure if they hit less than usual or not.... 0 -

I've had several times where deer will stop and go the other way. I've also had them keep running across the road. My grandfather has had one attack his vehicle during the rut. I really don't know if they work, but I think it's smart insurance-wise to have them. 0 -
After I hit a deer, I put them on my car even though I was very doubtfull. A year later we were driving slowly through a small town with kids and a pet in the street. The dog ran alongside my car and tried to bite my bumper at the place where the whistle was. I think he was hearing something. (I didn't hurt him). 0 -
According to my dad, there was an article in one of the local newspapers a few days ago recalling the time period when those were the new thing on the market. The conclusion mentioned in the article was that they were a waste of money. 0 -

The USFS put them on several hundred trucks for 2 years and saw no change in the # on deer/truck collisions. But this was at least 15 years ago. 0 -
Sure they work. They make the deer stop in the middle of the road trying to figure out what that sound is...right before you hit them. Seriously... A deers hearing is acute enough that they can hear your car coming as easily without them as with them. I have experimented with honking my horn as soon as I see deer on or along the road and have not seen that it has had any effect one way or the other. 0 -

I don't know if those whistles work or not.
It will help you to avoid deer by blowing your horn. Although deer can't understand headlights coming at them, they will react, and run away, from the sound of a horn.
I have tried this hundreds of times in the deer heavy environment of central Georgia, and never had a deer wreck.0 -

Amen! I hit the horn as soon as I see them. I love doing that at 4 a.m. next to a house.[:D]
I tell my wife to hit the deer rather than swerving and going into the ditch. Insurance companies pay better when you hit the deer instead of missing it.0 -
Most people don't put them on right they need the air flow, most I have seen are in the grill with no air getting to them. 0 -
I think the idea is that they make a noise that curious deer can hear and they stay put to try to figure out what is happening. If they stay put IN the road, you can see them and take appropriate action. If they stay put IN THE DITCH, you just drive by and are glad you got the deer whistles on your car.
The problem that I saw with them in New Brunswick was that they had ice in/on them most of the winter. Then they don't work at all!0 -
Yes they work. I'm in the insurance industry, and their studies have shown dramatic decreases in deer-collisions with the trucking firms that have allowed themselves to be "study groups".
An important factor in them working is that you keep them free of bug guts.

They go on the bumper?
I wish I could of heard this a couple of years ago. It really pisses the deer off when I try to install it on them, but I have to admit I've never see the deer again after the installation.0 -
if they cant hear a big semi or a regular truck rumbling down the road with its brights on, what makes you think a whistle will stop them 0 -
Got one from my insurance agent and put it on. Did not hit any deer, but almost became intimately aquainted with a cow elk, who seemed not to know she was just a very large deer.
I can say unequivocally that they might work. That is a definate maybe.0 -
There is always the probablity of comming across a deaf deer. I had heard the effects were negligiable do to the fact that no one can predict how an animal is going to react. I have personally witnessed a deer jumping onto a biker with loud pipes. When the biker saw the deer they let off of the gas and the bike got louder spooking the deer and making it jump onto the biker. That was a site! 0 -
Several years back one of my clients had 2 or 3 accidents involving deer. I sold him a set of the "whistles" and over the next few years
that I saw him, he reported no further problems.0 -

I'm not sure that proves anything more than that he is more carefull about NOT hitting them. I would be after hitting that many.0
