Cubs, if he had fired a warning shot two things would've happened...
    1. the law would have been there pronto
    2. one crook would have to clean out his pants and reconsider coming around your place too, good luck..watch out. Loko [:D]

Make that 3 things - warning shots are not permissible in Indiana so he would have been arrested and had his gun confiscated (at least temporarily)

I know the situation all too well cubs, and boy does it scare the crap out of you no matter how well prepared you are. Lucky for me, the cops, 8 of them were there within a minute of my call. It also helped that I was only a few blocks from the 6th street and it was the middle of the afternoon on Sunday.

Does a double tap to the chest followed by a command to FREEZE count as a warning shot? [:D]

From the perspective of 39 years as an insurance adjuster, the two best deterrents are light (floodlights, etc) and a damn good dog.
Can't beat a dog (inside, deeper the bark the better)

If, despite all, he gets in- hope your state has the Castle Doctrine- GA does.

How about target practice before coffee?

I'm gonna guess warning shots are just as illegal and self defense shots in Illinois.

This is the first house we've owned. You guys can remember some of the shady places you've lived, can't you?

It not such a bad street, but go a couple blocks East or West and it's a little shadier.

I still think a covey of pit bulls is in order to protect your homestead!

I am trying to forget all the shady places that I lived in Indiana!

I forgot you live in South Bend.

My parents lived in Gary for a few months while dad worked at the steel mills. Someone was stabbed to death outside their aparment complex. They found the killer hiding in the clothes dryer in a room at the bottom of the stairs.

This town really isn't that bad. Well it never used to be. Now were getting gangs from East Chicago/Gary coming down and causing a commotion.

If warning shots are not permissible....then simply say you fired in self-defense. And he fled the scene. It was dark. Looked like he may have had a gun.....etc.

Just don't admit to calling it a warning shot, for chrissake!! Joe

No! I live in Portland, Oregon. I did live in several areas of Indiana. Grew up in Kendallville, Angola and graduated high school in Richmond, IN. Graduated from College in Fort Wayne, Indiana University class of 1968, the first four year graduates out of the IU/Purdue Center!

whompuss. You just raised a question. If a large dog is acknowleged as a deterrent by insurance companys. Why will they cancel your policy for having a large dog on the property? (and I've already heard the "oh thats because a large dog is likely than a small dog to attack someone that will sue you and cost us money" spiel) To my mind its an essential part of a good "home security system"

If warning shots aren't permissable, find some cherry bombs and get a sling shot. Light the cherry bomb and shoot the thing at the perps with a slingshot. I guarantee you they will get out of there fast!
