Ruger Super Blackhawk problem --UPDATE--
I was out firing my mid 1970s Ruger Super Blackhawk today when the cylinder unlatched 3 times after firing.The gun would not recock unless I turned the cylinder by hand to reset it.I had it apart last year for a good cleaning.I have since fired 4 boxes of ammo thru it with no problems until today.The ammo I am using is Winchesters 240 grain jsp factory hunting ammo in the white box.I have fired another box of the same stuff with no problems.Recoil seemed to be excessive,but it has been about 6 months since I last fired this gun.Any ideas ?

Sounds like the cylinder is not staying locked probably due to wear. Take it to a smith to have checked out. worn parts are the most likely cause. But I would sideline that batch of ammo just in case.0 -
My oldest son was visiting me just yesterday and asked me about winchester ammo,said there was a recall on some of it going on now,mabee someone can find out what and why on pc,I aint that smart!Thanks,Paul 0 -
This SBH has seen little use for it's age.I have 4 put boxes of ammo thru it since I took it apart and gave it a good cleaning.The gun was put back together correctly and has no wear of any kind.By unlatched I mean the cylinder was no longer locked by the cylinder latch.Someone suggested that the base pin came part way out and that would explain why the gun would not cock due to the transfer bar hitting the firing pin.I checked the way I was holding the gun when I turned the cylinder to relatch it and may have pushed the base pin back in without noticing it had jumped out due to recoil which SBH's are known for doing some times.Sorry about posting in the general forum.

I learned long ago on my SBH to be sure the base pin does not have lube on it. That helps to keep it from coming out under heavy recoil. 0 -

Hey everyone, I'm new to the site after searching for info on base pin jumping. A few days ago I bought my dream gun, a brand new Ruger Blackhawk .45 convert. I took it out yesterday and after the first round the pin jumped. I don't want to hijack this thread, but other than making sure the pin isn't lubed, is there any "home fix" I can try? I noticed that one side of the release button screws into the other, can I just tighten this? Thanks and sorry to the original poster. 0 -
Yes you can tighten it down and it should help. I don't understand the don't lube it part as mine has always been lubed and has never been a problem. On the older SBH I'd call ruger.
I beleive it is the phoenix office but it was a while ago when I had mine serviced. All I ended up paying was shipping to them. You have to put a note in the box explaining your problem and I strongly suggest you ask them to perform a "SAFETY FUNCTIONS CHECK". It was free at the time and they inspect and replace every spring and screw at no cost. I also asked to have mine reblued ($35) beacause of wear. About 32,000 + rounds at that time. Mine was not timing right and was spitting out the sides between the barrel and the cylinder, and the ejector kept falling off.
I wrote this on a note and included a personal check for the bluing and return shipping. When I got the pistol back they had voided the check, put my pistol in a new box with a new original manual, installed a new barrell, and reblued the gun. It ended up only costing me the $12 shipping to them. They made it and if they'll fix it correctly for free, let them. Just my .020 -
Thread starter here.Today I installed a Belt Mountain base locking pin in my SBH.It fit in the frame tighter than the stock one.It is the short one that can be removed without removing the ERH.I will shoot it again this up and coming weekend.I will take the same ammo I used last weekend,plus several other boxes of 44 mag ammo,plus some 44 special ammo.

Wolff sells an "Extra Power" base pin latch spring that should help you out.

I already had the Belt Mountain base pin.I had read other posts talking about how sometimes Ruger SBH's spit their base pins while shooting heavy loads.I order extra parts for all my firearms just incase.I don't hunt,but keep the super loaded with heavy loads incase a four legged critter comes around while we are punching holes in paper.

I posted a message here two weeks ago about a problem with my Ruger Super Blackhawk.I have since replaced the factory base pin with one made by Belt Mountain.The one I installed is the short one with the locking screw.I took it SBH out again this last Saturday and fired it again with both 44 special and 44 magnum ammo.No problems this time.The Belt Mountain base pin fit in the frame tighter than the factory one,but did not require tools or honing to fit it to the frame.
I don't hunt anymore,so I think I will shoot mostly 44 special ammo in the future.I bought this SBH used from a pawnshop for $200.00 a few years ago.It was butt ugly until I removed the Poly Choke vent rib and the ugly home made grips.Ruger records says it was shipped in 1976,but it does not have the 200th year liberty roll mark on the top of the frame.

thanks for the thread, I recently acquired a SBH and after a day of shooting the pin fell apart. I just screwed it back in and thought maybe the previous owner had messed with it. I didnt realize it was a common problem. Time to check on the after market pin. 0 -
well i can't say its a real common problem but it does happen , I had probably 12 ruger blackhawks and super blackhawks over the years and have had only 1 that did it , seem like the fix i did to mine was to take a round file to the little groove in the base pin and made it a little deeper so the latch pin had more to catch on 0 -
I felt this was the best thing to do.Where we go shooting we have cougars and black bears running around.I always take the SBH along just in case.I always carry two handguns when we go shooting so one is always loaded.I use to take a 30-30 along,but it takes up alot of room in our small car.
