Grabbed My Gun Last Night.....
I was awakened last night at about 2am. I heard something that sounded like someone moving some boxes in my living room. My heart was pounding out of my chest I was so nervous. I realized I didnt have a phone in my room to call 911. Quickly I reached into my drawer and got my handgun.....immediately I calmed down because now I had a chance to defend myself. I walked out into the living room and then searched the whole house and nothing. False alarm. Afterwards it made me think......When I awoke it was 2am and my house was dark, all the lights were out. When I decided to go search my house, should I have turned the lights on as I searched or kept the house dark to give myself and advantage if someone was there so he would see me turning on lights ? Any suggestions on tactics ?

Get a dog.
I wouldn't turn on the lights. You know your way around in the dark, right?0 -
Get three big N mean Doberman Pinschers and turn them loose in your house at night.
Sleep like a baby.0 -
Get a Phaser and set it on stun.
I have two wall switches near my headboard - one turns the floods on around the perimeter of the house, and the other turns all the overhead lights on in the house.
Convince me that you are not a troll. please.

The best tactic is to not go searching at all. Just call out and let whomever is in your house know that the house is occupied. That being done, wait to see if you hear the sound of an intruder leaving. Most people also suggest letting the intruder know that you are armed as well. Me on the other hand, I will let the intruder know I am armed by letting him/her see the muzzle flash and feel the impact of a bullet. [8D]
I also suggest putting yourself in a position to have a clear shooting lane to the door in your bedroom without exposing yourself too much.
Just my opinion.0 -
Ive got my big, bad, vicious chiuaua [}:)]
If you get a dog. I suggest a Labrador (sp)
Beacuse their protective, and they like to swim when their not attacking someone [:)]0 -
I would advise surrounding your abode with sandbags. 0 -

I just finished it. Bought the first book way back when, read it then forgot about it. Started traveling for my job and was looking through the airport bookstore and saw it again, so I bought it and then devoured the rest. It truely is the best he has done. "Regulators" is second on the list.0 -
Newt: You really need to get back to basics and get trained from the beginning. You did almost everything wrong in that senario, Other than grab the gun of course. But you were not prepared. I would look into some professional training, or at least buy some good books and/or videos on personal defense. Good luck. 0 -

Regulators and Desperation where both good. Just finished Cell, that was surprisingly good. Lisey's Story has been a little dry so far. But the DT Series is denfinitly the best. I just wish there were more!

how so ? i dont like the suggestion that you should call out and then wait for the intruder to leave. i think the intruder might just lay low in a closet and be silent and wait for you to go back to bed. ut honestly, the reason why i introduced this thread was for opinions on the best way to clear your house in that situtation.0 -

I'm not being critical Newt, this is serious business. Thats why I suggested the training. It would be too lengthy to explain step by step what to do here on the forum. As for the calling out, you have already dialed 911 according to your "self defense plan", at that point you are in your "safe room" behind cover, with an open veiw and shot at the entrance to your room. Because the cops are on their way, and you are safely behind cover, you can warn the intruder in a loud voice, stating that you will shoot, in an effort to avoid the shooot out all together. There are many steps involved, thats why I suggested professional training. Thats how I learned.0 -
Oh man, you've got ghost's. Dude, your screwed. 0 -
put one of those lights on your gun. 0 -
Get a dog....nothing moves in my house without "Dudley" letting me know about it. 0 -
..sav99 hit it right. Have a phone. (Even though my PD's response time will be 15 minutes or more, at best) Stay put. Don't search the house. The defender always has the advantage. Keep the bedroom dark, while the hall light stays on all night. Hold your position.
..I know that the temptation to search the house is strong, as I've done it, but if you really think that you've been invaded, go into defensive mode, not offensive.0
