Iranian Technology Shooting Down Helicopters
the US is covering up loads of evidence that iranian shoulder fire missles are shooting down american helicopters in iraq. 5 have been shot down since an 20th and there is strong evidence that iran is suppplying the insurgents with the hardware. america needs to fight this war RIGHT or leave and stop getting america troops killed over politics.

The Reagan Administration sold shoulder-fired missles to Iran in the 1980's as part of the Iran-Contra criminal enterprise. The Reagan Administration sold shoulder-fired missles to Iran in the 1980's as part of the Iran-Contra criminal enterprise. Due to several design factors their shelf life is nowhere near this long. Even if you could manage to somehow ignite the rocket on one this old it would likely be more dangerous to it's user than the target.0 -
quarter century old? you act like 25 years old is old?
Lots of militaries still fly Mig-21s, and those are from the 60's, our A-10s are over 30 years old.
The electronics are probably still good, and if Iran can develop nuclear weapons, im sure they can replace ignition primers and such on these missiles.
I doubt anything needs replacing anyway, 30 year old soviet RPGs are working just fine.
Our well funded military may not have designed them to last that long, and may replace them regularly, but how many cars go past their 100,000 warranty? alot.
If our stingers were in Iraq in numbers and working properly, we'd have lost more than 5 helicopters. Maybe some are miss firing, but I beleive with enough 25 year old stingers, you would down a few helicopters.
I think it would be interesting to find out. Im sure our enemies would find it poetic justice to use our own stingers against us, like the way Doolittle attached Japan's friendship medals to the bombs they dropped on Japan (if only they saved two for Little Boy and Fat Man)0 -

Our government sure seems concerned about the potential use of Stingers in Afghanistan, the ones we gave the Mujahadeed in the 1980's. In fact, we are trying (unsucessfully) to buy them back from whoever may have them.

Our planes in Afghanistan have been shot at by shoulder-fired missiles on more than one occasion. The Stinger's age might make its homing systems inoperable, but they can still fire and act in the same fashion as an RPG with greater range and explosive power.0 -

We're talking about a sophisticated piece of equipment with an argon gas cooling system and a solid fuel rocket that's been either laying around or wagged across the region on donkeys for 25 years. This isn't anywhere near as simple a weapon as an RPG.
Our people are somewhat concerned about the freak US-supplied Stinger that still might actually fire and hit something, but it's been many years since one has scored a confirmed hit on anything. The real threat these days is from all the other types of shoulder fired missiles floating around out there.
BTW-Where are you obtaining dates of manufacture for all those RPG rounds being used in Iraq? It's true that some are pretty old, but you sound as if you're under the impression their production stopped in the mid-70's. In the case of the really old ones, solid rocket fuels don't have an indefinite shelf life for safe use. This has been evidenced by recorded instances in Iraq and Afghanistan of rockets detonating instead of burning when ignited. We've suffered more than one US casualty from this. Ask troops who've returned what directives they receive about firing old RPG rounds for familiarization.0 -

Mind you, that assumes that these are Stingers.

Stingers work, but are still late 70's technology. There are several newer and more efficient systems available on the world market.
Besides, if someone wanted a genuine US-made Stinger they can be had through any of several countries around the world who have them in their arsenals.0 -
