Gun Safe Question

I bought a used safe about five years ago. At that time, I called the manufacturer to see how fire resistant that model was supposed to be. I never got a good answer, other than, at the time it was built they were using a ceramic fire liner? or ceramic insulation? Whatever it is, it isnt very thick, probably 3/8" or so.
My question is --how do I increase the fire resistance?
I'm sure it would help to add a layer or two of 5/8" "Sheetrock"
under the top and three sides. But I was wondering if yall had any suggestions or experience with this sort of stuff.

    I am looking to get a gun safe SOON. I am willing to spend up to $1000. It needs to be able to fit at least 10 rifles and 10 handguns. What do you guys/gals recommend, and what brands do you think I should stay away from? Thanks! - Toe [8D]

    My wife and I are the only ones to know the combination.
    If we were to die together, such as car accident, what is the best way to pass on the combination without giving it to someone today?
    It is not that I don't trust relatives, but you got to keep honest people honest, that is what locks are for.

    Been looking on the net and my home town for a good gun safe. Read in this forum to get the biggest you can and bolt it down.

    Any ideas on a affordable gun safe?

    What is the cons on the electronic gun safes? I'm worried if the electronics break down somehow and I can't get the safe opened.

    Do you have a gun safe to protect the guns from the people in your house or from outside people who might want to steal them ? I am debating what size safe to buy. I live in a very safe area and I think I mostly want the safe to keep my newphews and nieces and other kids away from the guns. However, I wondered if I should just go for the big safe and spend the money. Do you think a 1000lb safe is enough for robbers ?

    You may as well assume that someone will try to steal the whole safe, regardless of how safe your neighborhood is. It's possible to walk off with a 1000 pound safe. Check out the Stolen Gun thread on here right now. Buy a decent safe. You'll never regret it.

    Buy a BIG, HEAVY safe and BOLT IT DOWN! It's not steal-proof, but why make it easy for them? Besides, maybe they'll really hurt themselves before they figure out it won't come off the floor [;)]

    definitely buy bigger, you'll regret getting a smaller safe. the size you got your mind on go up 1-2 sizes, trust me. i got a liberty 35Cubic ft, holds around 30 guns. i wish i had gone bigger. Also like what Boogey said bolt it down,

    Just keep in mind, no matter what, it can ALWAYS be stolen - bolt it down, and make sure it can't be unthreaded....Weld it, or whatever else it takes. Here's a good reason why:

    In addition to having a safe, a good monitored alarm system is suggested.

    My alarm system costs $14.95 a month for the monitoring service.

    I Bought the biggest safe that I could get in my house. 56" wide 1400lbs. Buy as big as you can, bolt to floor, get alarm,call insurance company to see how much they will cover on guns and then pray that so thug does not come and steal them.
    With the right tools I can cut the side out of your safe and take all your guns. Some people put gun powder in the safe but this tool has almost not sparks. Lets just hope the thugs are not smart enough to have this tool.

    Given enough time and effort ANY safe can be cracked.

    All you can do is make the process as difficult as possible to discourage the attempt.

    Lesser thieves are going to think twice if cracking the safe requires special tools, make lots of noise, or take lots of time.

    The best protection for your safe is to have its location concealed, and not let anyone know you have it, but that's not always practical.

    Another reason a safe might discourage a pro: In Michigan, at least, stealing a gun from someone's home is theft. Opening a safe is safecracking, and carries a much higher penalty. Won't stop everyone, but it'll stop the smart ones.....

    Runforest, a wise man will buy the largest safe he can possibly afford, much larger than he needs for his guns. You can store other valuables there, and it will put off the time when you have to buy a second safe by a couple of years.

    Your so-called best friends are your worse enemy.
    When it comes to gun theft.
    As most are stolen by people that you have meet or know, and know what you have.
    A good seperate alarm system for the safe is always a good ideal to keep honest people honest.
    BOLT THAT SAFE DOWN!!!!

    Dont use the same alarm system as the house, get a seperate system for the safe.
    Cell phone based alarms work good, if the phone line is dead.
    Mine will automaticly swap over to the cell phone.

    Also the alarm company knows if the #5 alarm goes off, they have a full list of freindly LEO's to contact, including myself.

    Its worth the $16.95 for the cell and the monitoring fees.
    All it takes is one time.

    Started with one safe, and now I have three. A fire rated safe, bolted to the floor is the best you can do. All mine are electronic touch pads and it is easy for me to get in them.

    What I did was I bought 2 smaller safes and bolted them to geather and then bolted them to the floor, 2 small safes are easer on the owner to move, If need be.
