Remington makes an AR type?
In the "Zumbo response" thread, Nwcid posted a response by the president of Remington. In that response he said:

It was up against the SR-25 type rifles for scout/sniper trials if I remember.

Diversification is key in this industry. Someone at Winchester should have figured that out a long time ago.
To say "we make shotguns and rifles" is foolish. It's like a car manufacturer that says we make full size trucks and rear wheel drive cars only. If you want a compact car go to the Japs.
Smith and Wesson understands it. They came out with their own AR last year. While I've heard the price has dropped, I haven't heard much else about it.
I've wondered why Remington hasn't merged with a handgun or assault rifle company. There has been rumors about them not doing well financially. It's not the product, it's the economics of the industry.
Like so many other forms of manufacturing, I don't think the firearm industry can continue doing the same thing it has always done. Change. Adapt. Consumer taste is key. Cutting cost is always important in American manufacturing. The trick is to combine the two. Give the consumer what they want as taste and demand changes. Utilize the current plant property and equipment to make new and different products.
Yeah, I think Remington better make or buyout an AR style if it wants to stay in business. The market is competitive, but there is room for innovation and an economical price. Look at the idea of making an AR-15 with an AK gas system. Great marketing idea and it can be done while keeping the rifle economical. If I was Remington, I would go straight to this style. Don't waste time with making the same thing everyone else makes. Market it for consumers and LEO, then think about military versions.
That's my two cents.

See, that's what I'm trying to find out. Is the CEO's phrase "AR based" some other firearm that uses one or two AR parts/designs like the rifle that uses AR magazines, as already mentioned, or if it's actually an AR clone(AR10) and "AR based" is just corporatespeak for "we cloned an AR and slapped our sticker on it"0 -
I am thinking that they want to market an AR in the future. I doubt they will be the manufacturer and will most likely have another company make the firearms and they will be marketed with Remington on it.
Smith & Wesson are not the manufacturer of their AR15 but is marketing them as their own. If you knew who makes the Smith & Wesson Ar15 you could save yourself 300.00 and have the same rifle.0 -

For an unknown company they have done a lot of marketing in the last year. I read one puff-piece article that said Stag has been making AR parts for years What exactly does that mean??
While I think about the time line, Stag and S&W seem to coincide.
I still think there is huge potential for Remington with an AR. They have the factory. Wouldn't think it would take much for additional tooling. Plus there is always outsourcing. Don't think complicated. Make it simple, economical, but enough different that people think it is better. Market an AR with an AK gas system.0 -
Just remember, it's all about the money.
The moment Remington, or any other huge gunmaker, decides it can afford to screw over it's civilian market in exchange for government goon-squad sales, it will. It has happened before, and it will surely happen again, what with the massive increase in Federal and State armament demand.0 -

My understanding is that Remington partnered with DPMS on a rifle that was submitted for a gov't/military contract, which they were not awarded. 0
