Please fill me in on Ft. Worth Tx
I am flying out there for a possible job, specifically in the Hurst Texas area. Anything I should know, stay away from, a hotel I should stay at, and there is a definite possibility that I would end up living there by the begining of April. So it's kind of a big deal if the area is good or bad. Names of surrounding communities to look for housing would also be good, as well as names of where the 'hood is.

Stay away from the Mexican gangs. They are really mean.
The steaks are awesome. Don't order them blood rare. They are purple in the middle...and they don't bleed.
If you eat enough Whataburgers they become rather tasteless.
There is a bbq place out by the Farmland Industries grain elevator that was pretty good too.0 -
Ft. Worth is a big city just like the rest of the big cities. It has an Outback, a Subway, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, KFC, it has Walmart, Costco, Dillard's, Macy's, Cabellas. Liquor stores, church's, schools and crack houses. Rich people, poor people, cops, crime and Peyton Place, a speedway, a slum.
Just like every big city in America. The good news is that the sticks aren't far away. AND, there is a great knife place called House of Knives on Loop 620. Prices are a little high, but eye candy deluxe!! Castle Guns is a nice gunshop in Ft. Worth.

We looked into moving to Ft. Worth area last year with Lockheed. Housing costs compared to NE PA were unbelievable. We found a 2200 sq ft house, 4 bed, 2.5 bath with a master suite to include sitting area, 2 car garage on over 1/4 acre lot for $105K. Great subdivision west of 820 loop off of Chapel Creek Blvd, one of the only houses in the neighborhood without and in-ground pool. The same house here would be $400K. Satellite photos showed this to be a clean looking area. The school district was very well rated.
There's no state income tax. Big plus!!0 -
I go thru Hurst every day. It's set on Hwy 183 between Dallas and Ft. Worth. Been here 40 years. I'm a contractor and I work in Hurst a lot. I know ALL the gunshops, restaurants, neighborhoods, gunshops, malls, Bass Pro, Cabelas, Sportsman's Warehouse, gunshops.
Yeah, I like gunshops.[8D]

Hurst is part of what's called the H-E-B part of town, short for "Hurst, Euless, Bedford", because although they have different names, they're pretty much indistinguishable. it goes west to east in that order. since dallas is to the east, when driving from dallas to fart worth (they're pretty much grown together) you leave dallas, go past an airport, and going into fart worth you first drive through Bedford. then euless, then hurst. but hurst still isn't the middle of fart worth. so that's the layout.
yes, Hurst Oldsmobiles were named after this place. there was an Oldsmobile plant there and they do like to race cars in DFW.
I don't know what's a good part of town regarding fart worth, cuz I lived in dallas. but I think if you live in western dallas (central to DFW) such as grapevine (nice), coppell (too nice), carrollton (avg), arlington or grand prairie (avg) then the commute wouldn't be that bad. everybody drives all over for anything. traffic moves surprisingly well for the volume of traffic- it's like one big automotive mosh pit. and it's a huge place- there's so much stuff it's easy to lose track of how far away things are. one job I had, I drove about 1 hr 20 min each way to work every day (smoking 2-3 cigarettes each way) didn't think anything about it.
that one highway that chops DFW into north and south, is it hwy 20 or hwy 30? I forgot. south of that is bad, north is better. generally speaking, simply don't go south of that. it can get very rough. I never thought it would be possible to see a neighborhood that I was actually scared to be in. well, I saw it. I spent about 5 years in dallas, and for the most part, the south might as well have not existed. so don't even bother looking for a 'nice' place to live anywhere south of that hwy.0 -

Hurst is OK, Arlington is the home of Tarrant County Junior College (Babe-alicious!), there's a joint about halfway between D & FW called the Rockin' Chair that has real saddles for bar stools and some really cute barmaids, if in downtown FW, check out Dadio's; a real-live jam session is goin' on all the time and it's close to the freeway if you have to leave in a hurry.
My sis just moved into Dallas proper,and loves how much cheaper everthang is than in Austin, where she used to live.
Texans are wierd about danger; they come to nM to get drunk and get in fights, but they all shy away from the Meskin side of town when they're at home-go figger.
However, unless you speak jive better than Barbara Billingsley (see Airplane!); stay North of the Loop. A few friends and I drove right through the most ungodly slums/barrios/funkytowns when we were on our yearly odyssey through any neighboring state, and almost didn't make it past all the Popeye's and crackhouses to get back to the freeway!
Looked a lot like the Middle Ages in Miss! Or maybe they were having a casting call for the Hurricane Katrina Show.0 -

You so called DFWites, remember the Winchester Gun Range, Storybook Land & the Old Western Fort on Hwy 183?
Hurst (Has nothing to do with the Olds Hurst) - Useless=Euless - Leadford=Bedford, fairly nice, low middle income to mid middle income housing.
Schools have also been fairly good.
Very little blacks.
Mexicans & Asians have started to move into the older areas.
University Park, Turtle Creek in Dallas is nice.
Are the gypsies still around the Lake Worth area of Ft. Worth?
I like Ft. Worth better, more laid back, lower income level hosing even in the nice areas.
All the LEO's, in the area, IMHO, can be major gentlemans, and love speed traps.
All competing for the traffic revenues.0 -
THe rangers play baseball in Arlington, UT has a campus in Arlington. The Fort Worth City dump is the best place to look for armadillos of anywhere in the world, or used to be. Good Zoo in FW as well as in Dallas, most of the good resturants I know are probably gone by now. Outdoortexas from this board would not mind an e mail and could certainly help out with info. It would be worth a visit to his shot if you have a couple of hours. Say hi for me! 0 -
...The funky part of FT.Worth is the East side, or South East side...best to stay out of that area(s)...gang city, for real. I had to be in that area a few years ago, 3 people (teenagers) got whacked across the street from me while they were standing in a parking lot....drive by's are the norm in that area.
The rest of Ft Worth is like any other large city,but the people are friendly, fairly safe. Just avoid the areas I mentioned.
Stock yard area is a great entertainment area. LOTS of hotels around the DFW airport...and scattered around the city...[;)]0 -
Be sure to check out some of the areas to the north, too, like Flower Mound, Highland Village, Copper Canyon, Double Oak, and Argyle. Good schools, low crime, between Dallas and Fort Worth to the north, so you are guaranteed a long drive no matter which city you end up working in. [:o)] 0
