Playmates in the wild
Stuart Brown describes Norbert Rosing's striking images of a wild polar bear playing with sled dogs in the wilds of Canada's Hudson Bay.
The photographer was sure that he was going to see the end of his huskies when the polar bear materialized out of the blue, as it were:
Obviously it was a well-fed bear...
The polar bear returned every night that week to play with the dogs....and never harmed them.
* Even with the possibility that these images were "doctored" (ie: Photoshop), I think they're still pretty cool. [8D]

I think a bear would eat a dog only as a last resort. Carnivores usually don't eat each other (but will kill others as threats to food source which maybe the bear didn't see the dogs as being).
I once saw a cow playing in a field with a rabbit. They chased each other back and forth having a good old time.0 -
Great photos and story, especially if it is true. Although bears have a great sense of play, I didn't know they would play with dogs.
A big game guide I knew in the wilderness of British Columbia had his prize Huskie killed by a Grizzly, and this guy was determined to kill that bear if it was the last thing he ever did.
The Huskie had gorged himself of moose meat and could barely walk, the Griz came into the yard and just killed the dog.
I also have heard of black bears killing dogs that were tied up.0 -

I lost touch with Larry, and I never found out if he killed that bear.

What got the dogs to calm down, relax, and accept the bruin?
What got the bear to approach without knowing the outcome of the encounter?
Too many questions. No significant answers. A believable scenario, is the bear would be seen walking by at a distance. And keeping his distance.
