Less expensive ammunition

I don't make all that much money but I'm looking to finally pick up a hunting rifle for myself when the gun show comes around. What ammunition would you recommend that not too expensive and packs a good amount of power? Not as much as something like a 7 mil magnum though, I couldn't stand that round.

  You really can't beat the good ol' .308. You can get good quality plinking ammo for a reasonable price. Hunting ammo is less expensive than others, too.

  Second the .308 Win./NATO- you can go from blasting ammo to match grade ammo.

  I've shot the 30-06 through the garand before but haven't had a chance with the 308. How does it shoot?

  The 30-06 beats the heck out of is baby brother the .308 any day. And most places it is a couple bucks a box less expensive and easier to find.
