To gain mass you must use heavy weights with few reps and you must work until failure. Light weight with a lot of reps builds defenition in muscle.

My max bench is around 225, I typically rep around 150-170. I do barbell curls. You don't max them out, but I curl about 90 for reps.

Low/medium weight with HIGH reps. I have seen greater results with this then high weight low reps. Everyone is different.

I stopped working out when MuscleMedia2000 went under. But I think you are on the right track Nighthawk, seems like you would need strength and flexability and speed to be a warrior, not just strength where you can barely raise your arms above your head.

you've got to do both so your muscles don't get too used to one kind of excersize. Ripping up is more about diet.

muscle memory is acquired in time, and is more "permanent" muscle.

I did the exact same thing for a couple of years. It wasn't until I went to a trainer that I really started getting noticable results.

don't forget your protein! Protein! PROTEIN!!!

your buddy that was "stout as an angus" had completely different genetics. Everybody is different, and will respond completely differently to the same excersizes.

I highly encourage you to do 3 or 4 weeks HEAVY(4-6 rep maxes), and then go back and hit your 8-12 rep max. Then if you want to through in some really high rep weeks every now and then, it won't hurt, but don't get caught up in doing the same thing week after week, because you will not get the results (strength, stamina, shape) that you want by doing the same thing over and over again.

Like w/Odawgp: No offense intended, but why 10 reps? Because you have 10 fingers? You should pick a weight, and lift it until you have muscle failure, and cannot lift anymore. If you get 10 the first set on a particular weight, you should not be getting 10 the 3rd set. If you are, then you need to go up in weight.

Concentrate on the number of reps that you need to achieve, not the ammount of weight.

I tend to limit myself to 12 oz. curls, and dead lift as much as the fish weighs. [:D]

I don't bench heavy, just up to 200 lbs. I don't go for mass, being that I'm 5'9" and 150#, just definition. Found that overhand pullups, dips, pushups, situps, oblique crunches work best for me, with plenty of running for good measure.

    About noon...
What-A-Burger....double meat with cheese and fries.
    Gotta change some habits.
Soon to be 55..6'3" at 235lbs...mostly beer gut.
    Like to drop 30 lbs.
End of summer should be around 215. Yard work equals sweat.
Normaly drop 15 lbs or so.
    Winter I get it back.

[:D][:D] Me too.. and I also carry my 18# HK thru the woods. Every once in awhile I will pick up the chainsaw for a few reps of wood cutting.

I go to the gym and try about a dozen repetitions on each separate machine, take a short walk around the track, and repeat.

I basically just work out until I feel satisfied, not exhausted, so I keep the weight down to about 100 or so pounds.

i lift windshields every day. large one pieces for international trucks, several 2 pieces for peterbuilts, f150, hummers, accords, mercedes, bmw...etc. that is my workout. of course it is better than what i did in high school and college... lifting 100lb turkeys.

I mix it up some...right now i am doing high weight at 5 reps 3 times so by last set cant do any more....last night i just did cardio and them just tested the max i could do....could'nt get true max as i did two 200lb bench press....200 lbs is the full stack on the machine.....each set i do i increase the weight each time

and as mentioned protein.....at least 1 gram protein for each lb of body weight that takes some pretty good eating to do that.

Dcon i farm and ranch and i am doing the workout thing...pretty good way to take out the stress on some iron...instead of the fertilzer guy or the banker ect ect[:D]....has put me in much better frame of mind since i have started working the iron.

In college I was all about heavy weight...max bench was about 310 and I could curl 135 a couple times. Now, I'm 30 and I have no interest in lifting like that. I do cardio about every day and I do push-ups, pull-ups, crunches and dips. Good enough for me. My joints can't take all the heavy stuff anymore.

Up until about five years ago I worked out with heavy weight and less reps. As I am pushing 50 I have cut back to light weights and more reps.

My current work out consists of 20-30 minutes on an excerise bike
and three sets around a circuit of 7 stations which includes Bench,
Lats, shrugs, curls, Tries, and butterfly. Light weights
25-50 reps depending on the station.
