Short rifle barrels

I'm just curious. Is it illegal to purchase a short barrel for a non-registered non-NFA firearm if you do not install it on that firearm? I know that the possession of auto sears and such is illegal and posession of certain other parts is a no-no.

For example, you can purchase short barrels for a properly registered NFA AR-15 as long as you follow the proper procedures for doing so. Can't you install these short-barrelled uppers on AR-15 type pistols legally? What if you own an AR-15 and a AR-15 type pistol and have a short barrelled upper stored in the same safe as those two firearms? Can't it be justified that the short barrelled upper is intended for use with the pistol?

Just curious. I own none of these things but the other BATFE thread got me thinking about the squirrelly ways of the BATFE.

    Im pretty sure that as long as its not on the gun its ok. Thompson contenders are a good example. You could put a barrel extension on it as long as its permanently attached (welded).

    Thompson Center fought this battle for 20 years. Apparently, atf tried to say the mear possession of a super 14" contender barrel with a carbine stock in the same vehicle or house was a violation even though the two were not attached to the frame. I think T/C finally prevailed and now you can have a contender frame, a 14" barrel and a handgun grip as well as a 16" carbine barrel and buttstock as long as you do not attach the short barrel to the frame with the carbine buttstock.

    I think the AR, due to its "lego like" design, is the only firearm the BTAFE makes this leap of "intent". I know possession of full auto parts for an AR15, and possession of an AR is asking for bad karma ... but since when are auto-sear's illegal?

    If they are, howzit all the surplus firearms kits that contain all the full auto parts, except the receiver ... AK's, HK's, Sten's, Galil's, UZI's ... are floating around?

    My bad. I thought that possession of the auto sear was illegal--at least if it's stored in close proximity of a firearm that can be altered to full-auto with that auto sear. It's hard to keep track of all those laws.

    Is it possible to put AR-15 uppers (particularly the short-barreled ones) on one of the AR-15 pistols?
