Man Gets 240 Years in Prison For Hate Crime
NEW YORK (AP) -- A New York judge has sentenced a black man to 240 years in prison for taking hostages in a bar and telling patrons that "white people are going to burn tonight."
The judge told Steven Johnson that he'd forfeited his "right to live in society."
Johnson was convicted earlier this month of attempted murder, assault and other charges, including some designated as hate crimes.
He'd invaded a bar in Manhattan's East Village in June 2002 carrying three pistols, a samurai sword and a container of kerosene. He told police he looked for "happy" white people to avenge the mistreatment of blacks.
He shot and wounded three people, including a police officer, and sprayed kerosene on several customers and threatened to set them on fire before being subdued.
His lawyer says Johnson has diagnosed mental disorders.

Where is the typical outrage about "hate crime" sentencing? Why isn't anyone on here going off about how that "hate crime" legislation isn't needed, because there are already laws against those crimes?????? I also enjoy a good rant against the hate crime laws....where are they?

GOOD!!! Of course, I would rather an old Russian law apply, when any sentence over 25 turns to death penalty.

There shouldn't be a classification of "hate crime", white or black. Lets look at the crimes, shall we?
1. At least 3 handgun possession charges, I assume that because its NYC those are felonies.
2. Several charges of brandishing weapons....
3. 3 Counts of attempted murder....maybe malicious wounding
4. Hostage taking
5. Attempted arson
I'm sure a decent DA could think of several other charges as well. The point is, even without a "hate crimes" sentance he would have been in prison for the rest of his natural life anyways.....0 -
So what does that mean, he will be able to apply for parole in 20 right ??? 0
