the 5 years between High School and enlistment, I welded during college and after. MIG, TIG, and Arc. Mild and stainless steel. I tried aluminum never got the hang of it. 0 -
mig,gas ie...ox/ac with mild steel and brazing all positions and arc.....done some tig on alum...when going to school for diesel mech...our welding instructor we had asked me if i was a certified welder told him no he said you damn sure could be. 0 -

Not a welder by trade, but had to learn and have done considerable from 35 years of the farm and ranch work. Never forget the first thing i actually tried to stick together when i was about 14. Dad looked at it and told me it looked like the nests the dirt dobbers built in the corners of the barn.... 0 -

I work in a maintenance shop and we have certified welders do pipe and structural steel. If I have to weld, I will but it usually looks like a porcupine when I am done. I did make my own version of a Texas Star for target practice. That turned out OK. Those of you who shoot USPSA will know what a Texas Star is. Bshooter 0 -
I gas weld 0.020, 0.030 and 0.063" 3003 H14 Aluminum into bike gas tanks. I don't care for MIG, and TIG puts too much heat into the part. It's wild to watch a tank quiver like Jello as it tries to figure out if it wants to be a solid or a liquid. 0 -

I weld in between trades and have a 6G SMAW (stick) ASME SEC IX 98 Xray gas pipe cert. along with GTAW (tig) 6/GR FCAW ST Pipe (Fluxcore)
GMAW (Mig)
Surgical with a Oxy/Acy torch and CAG (carbon arc gouging)
API 104 certs along with robotic welding programming/setup
Mastered about all of it except GTAW aluminum pipe, too damn fast!0 -

Not certified, but I've been gas welding and brazing for 30 years.
Also do some Fusion and filler welding on stainless (TIG)
I can stick metal together with a stick welder, but I don't claim to be good at it, one look at me last welds (vertical, mild steel to SS) would tell you that [:D]
For tough / critical welding I call in a pro IE: welding broken NiChrome heating elements, Stainless to Die steel, Stainless to Inconel etc.0 -
I am self taught with stick and wire feed.
My welds do not look pretty but they will hold any type of thing I would weld!
But also I would never try to weld anything that needed to be a major support or anything like that as I do not trust my welds that much.
I have also done gas welding on mufflers and such but that has been many years ago.0 -

MIG/MAG(here GMIV/GMAV with solid thread or FCAW-electrode),
TIG(here GTAV),
rod (here MMA, standard electrode and high gain) and
automatic SAW-welding (putting out some powder onto the material that needs welding and the powder becomes the slagg, the bare electrode is put through the powder).
Acetylene/Oxygene-welding and last..
Friction-welding.
Materials I have worked with, are : Iron, standard steel, various types of stainless steel, aluminum and the alloy that ships propellers are made of (that's some nasty stuff that'll give you the scitters in an hour if you inhale the gasses, it'll last a couple of days)0 -
I was a certified emergency Nuclear welder when I was on the boat. After the Navy I haven't welded very much.
Inconel, 304 Stainless, Carbon Steel and Brazing was what I was taught.0 -

I have some of the burn scars to prove that I was trained in ARC and Gas welding back many years ago. Never experienced the joy of MIG or TIG but sell them where I work part time.
Not certified and have not welded for many years, but I sure respect the trade and have seen some welding that I can see was completed by someone who was very gifted, a true craftsman.[:)] Its an art to some and a job for others.0 -
once apon a time I had an I-car certificate for mig. nothing like welding on cars for a living. I have also been known to catch my shirt on fire. I hate it when that happens! 0 -
C[8D][8D]L I Haven't hit the 30 year mark yet but getting close. I still think this one of the many trades that you can never stop learning.
We are tossing and idea around for a shop challenge for fun. Winner gets paid lunch for a week!

I've always wanted to learn. I'm going to finish up my Bachelor's degree within the next year and hope to kick start my MBA in 2009. I'll have a ton of GI Bill money to burn when I retire in 2017. I thought about picking up some training in the trades and welding came to mind. It always seems like there's SOME work for people who are good with that skill. What's the best way to get into it? I figured Vo-Tech would be the way to go. Is there anything to look for when searching for a good vo-tech welding program?0
