I was booking a man into jail, and got to the question about his employment and occupation.

    "I collect disability."

HMMM. He looks healthy enough, 30-something years old, reasonably intelligent, so I ask, "How are you disabled?"

"I have hammertoe real bad, and had to have a toe removed."

I tried to offend him then, but I don't think I managed it. "So...how do you feel when you see someone in a WHEELCHAIR on his way to WORK?"

A few years before, I was talking to another guy, 27 years old and healthy, not real bright, but capable of doing a lot of jobs. He just kept showing up where he didn't belong, causing trouble. I figured if he had a job, he wouldn't have time to be a nuisance, so I asked.

    "I draw disability."

    "Why?"

"Well, I never learned to keep my mouth shut or get along with people, so I can't keep a job."

"So, you're telling me you draw disability for being an a%%%%le?"

    "Yep."

I remember looking at my first checks and wondering where all the money I worked for went. Who is FICA ? Of course gas was not 40% of my wages neither.

Well, without the system as it is, I'd have trouble putting food on the table.

Because, you see, my wife is a fraud investigator for Social Services.[:D]

now im only 16 years old but this welfare stuff is starting to tick me off. every pay check i get there is so much missing thats gone into welfare, i dont see why the hell i should work my ass off just for my money to go to someone else, its not my problem i shouldnt have to gie you my money, its BS, then there is Social Security, i really enjoy putting money into a fund that i wont get anything out of, its gonna be gone by the time i retire, everyone should either get exactly what they put in out or we should just delete the entire thing, people should be responsible for their own retirement, there is too much government involvement, is there anyone here that agrees with me??

Wait till the mexicains come. Its going to get worse before it gets better I think.

We need a system, but I think that most people getting benefits should either have a) established "credit" by paying into the system - at whatever level - for some length of time or b) be put to work doing something to benefit society back. Various "great works" type projects, community involvement, etc. And yes, there should be a fall back for those who have never been able to pay into the system, who are completely disabled and need 100% care, etc.

BTW akfanatik - if you save $2000 a year every year between now and when you are 25, and then never put another penny in, at simple interest you'll have not quite 1 million dollars...Change that to a pre-tax Roth IRA and you'll be settin pretty at 65.... Work hard now while you are young and (i don't imaging) don't have many true costs and debts and save up most of that early and you'll be that much more ahead... and believe me, it is easier to just not spend so much of the "little" you make now than it is to have enough left over to save when you are 30,have a wife, kid, mortgage, etc. :)

jabronij3 has it 100 percent right.

" I totally agree on the welfare part of this. Welfare does need to be stopped!

SS is a completely diferent animal though. I once felt as AK did in that I thought it was a waste and that I would never see a penny for what I paid in. Then I got hurt to were I cannot work! Now I am glad that it was there for me to fall back on.

I agree that there can be some major upgrades done to the SS system to improve it, and there should be some major studies into doing so.

I do qualify for some welfare as well (ie food stamps and medical for my kids) but I refuse to go draw that stuff because I do not believe in it!

I think if a person get welfare that they should have to earn it! There are plenty of jobs that the people on welfare can do in our government buildings to earn that money! I am talking jobs like janitors, cleaning litter from the streets, and a host of other types of jobs like that which takes no brains at all to do!"
    - GRD

The point is that there should be a system to help AMERICANS who need help. There should be drug tests for welfare recipients, and may their children should be raised in some sort of positive orphanage, rather than hurting the kids and rewarding the promiscuous women who have them.

These are not systems that need a quick glance to fix - they need to be ripped apart, objectively analyzed and put back together in a reasonable and responsible way.

Unfortunately, this appears to me to be needed therapy for our entire government.

Now everyone is saying that since im only 16 i dont have any expirience in real life and dont know what its like to pay all kinds of taxes, cuz i havent been doing it my whole life, and thats what im saying, right now what is coming out of my check isnt as much as many others, but eventually ill put in as much as everyone else and i dont want to do that the rest of my life, the bottom line here is that i dont want my hard earned money going to some lazy scumbag

In my opinion people need to take a little responsability for thier lives. It's horsepoop that people expect big brother to come get them out of their fix. I'm only 28 years old and have already planned my "just in cases". If I get injured I have a plan and it doesn't include big brother. If I die, my wife will be rich. I also will not have to depend on SS or any other goverment aid if I work until I retire. If I get crippled we won't live like kings most likely, but we won't be in poverty either.

People need to understand that their life is their life and their responsiblity and they have to plan ahead for the worst case scenerio. The only thing that would hurt greatly is if our whole money system, stocks, ect went down the tube. Then I have some gold, but not enough I'm currently working to get that more secure. Everyone would be a in pickle if that happened anyway.

The down side is I'm not able to spend freely on crap like most people.

"Trust me when I say most of these people are in it for the free ride!"

Please, Kevin....you're the last one that should be telling anyone they don't have a position to comment here. I know you're respected here but I don't really care. I've had enough already!!

I am 100% service conected. I started at 10% back in 93.I have been considering going back to driving truck 1 or 2 days a week. That was my normal line of work for 16 years and is what I did in the Army. I can still drive I just can't do my own loading or unloading.
There are many, many national companies that are "no touch freight".

Like I said I currently get 100%, plus I am on SSD. I have been on both now for over 2 years (I worked for a while when I was getting 100% from the VA so I was not on SSD durring that time).

And because I do not have the tag from the VA I can still work part time as long as I do not make more than $860 per month as then I have problems with social security.
Which in alot of peoples cases (includeing mine) comes out even more of a benifit as not only do you make that money but at the end of the year most would qualify for Earned Income Credit which is even more money.
So you can see that there are benifits to not getting tagged as "UNEMPLOYABLE".

Please......There are many that have service inflicted (connected) injuries that are way too proud to "milk" the system. But not to fear....I'm sure the new kid in the shop with 30% for sleep apnea will be at 100% by next year with your advice on how to defraud the taxpayer and the VA system.

The whole system needs an overhaul and all able bodied persons need to be put to work!! You're just another example!!

Please, Flame away...I know it's coming.

I am not milking the system!

My injuries were bad enuff to get me a medical discharge and there fore robbed me of my chances of ever getting a retirement from the Army (which I did plan on doing)! So yes I do feel that I am owed something that I was not allowed to persue!

If I had gotten out on my own accord then things would have been different!

And I did work untill about 4 years ago when I was hit by a drunk driver which tore me up bad enuff that I can no longer work! It was not untill then that I went on SSD for the remainder of my income.

So you can put that in your pipe and smoke it along with that green stuff!

House taxes are trying to get me for $5,000 this year. I thought it was cheaper to have a house? I only hope the housing here in Houston goes through the roof like it did in Oregon so I can make a huge profit. [:D]

Eh I've owned my house for 1 year. It's already jumped $15,000 and thats not just what they appraised it for. Thats what other houses in the neighborhood are selling for and they are selling I've been watching. Haha I know what you mean though. They won't fly through the roof like Oregon, however it will go up in price since this worlds not getting any bigger and there are just more and more people. The higher the prices go the more land I can buy in Montana, Wyoming, or Alaska when I figure out how to make a living there or retire.

Didn't have much going on when I was about 19 I was working as a welder for Gundersons in Portland and wanted to get into underwater welding in the oilfield. Sister lied to me about a job that would train me and put me to work doing that in Houston. Headed down here and no job haha. She just wanted her little brother here I'm guessing.

Now I stay away because I did end up getting into the oilfield and make good money for my age and education.

Heres the biggest reason why I don't try and head home.

    1. Price of living especially housing costs there.
    2. Hard to find a job that pays well enough to be comfortable with a wife and two kids with only a GED in Oregon.
    3. To many damn tree hugger lovey hippy types in Oregon.

I went back to visit Oregon to go elk hunting and annoy my family last October and I just didn't like all the damn hippy/yuppy types I saw. I like how folks act in Texas. Blunt, good ole boy system, country, love their guns, and ect.

I do miss the woods in Oregon I used to stay in the mountains up around Tillamook just wandering around when I was younger.

    Kod,

My taxes went up only 20% this year. Many folks in Marion county (Indy) went up 50-100%. Police were stationed at county assessor offices in the area.

Years ago we had gone a LONG time without any medical coverage. The kids started playing sports....so I got nervous and applied for ALLKIDS. It is a state healthcare plan for low income families. WE MADE TOO MUCH MONEY!!! It makes no sense at all to me WHY....but rather than pay a larger portion of our bills and be covered by ALLKIDS...they put our kids on Medicaide.

It was better than any coverage I had delt with.....EVER! My bills were paid 100%. There was no co-pay, no percentage for certain procedures, no certain types of visits that weren't covered....even the prescriptions were paid for TOTALLY! I was SO mad....I had paid and paid out the nose all those years for Blue Cross, paying co-pays and percentages of costs!!! It kills me to think about it.

Now we are covered with my husband's job...and we pay out the nose again for every little thing that comes up. I also got WIC when the older of my two were babies. Its a food program that is supposed to gear you to "better food" choices if you have babies. It was offered to me through some person who was based at the hospital I had the girls at.... I signed up because it gave you a free CASE of baby formula every month. I didn't stay on the program when the babies came off of formula....but you can stay on it for many many years and it gives you MONEY toward certain foods.

I agree totally that these programs are helpful (since I have benefitted myself from these things)....I just think if you defend the system you don't see what I do. If you work...and can't make ends meet there should be help. BUT...if you work and can't make ends meet and also have a set of 10" subs in your car...you should be taken out to sea and dropped off on an island like they did the leppers of Molakai many years ago.

LETS PICK AN ISLAND OUT YOU GUYS!!!!

Here's MY beef. They started adding beneficiaries to the SS program that were never intended to receive SS. There's so many ways to receive SS now it's not even funny. They also need to change the age at which you receive it in order to keep it in line with the way it was orginally intended. It was originally intended to take care of old widows whose husbands typically died before they did in the rare event that they lived to be 65 years old. You have to adjust the age that the benefit kicks in to keep it in line with life expectancy.

Fine. The government wants to force me to save for retirement. I can see that. So they kick in this SS bullsnot. That's fine. Force me to pay a chunk of my paycheck every month to SS. However, why won't the government let ME decide how it's invested? I guaran-dang-tee you that I can do a better job. I've spoken with TWO financial advisors in the last 6 months who have both told me, independently, that they couldn't do a better job than I have as a self-directed investor. Who says you should be entitled to a piece of my paycheck just because you didn't plan and prepare?

Another good rule to live by is live within your means. That is the number of kids you have, kinds of cars, how big your house is, ect, ect.

At the end of the month if you aren't saving a decent amount of your check you aren't in my opinion living within your means.

Take a peek at how they live in Africa and alot of places in Asia then think about the oppurtunities you are provided just living in this country and the chances for work and tell me how hard you have it.

What sort of a role model is a parent who's idea of a job is to go down to the mailbox and collect a check. Kids copy their parents remember.
But how about this for an idea.
Anyone on welfare is made subject to random drug tests, if there positive the first time there given two choices, tell the cops who they got the drugs from or lose their welfare. The second time they test positive they simply lose their welfare until they test negative.
That should put a dent in the drug epidemic this Country is suffering.

I have worked since I was 15 and that was back in the 1950's. I heard the same talk all my life and guess what!! I am now 65 and collecting social security. Its in my account on the same day each month, automatically, like clockwork. I have medicare insurance, although I have to pay each month a portion of my social security check to receive the part B.

Point is its not a retirement plan, who can live on only a small portion of what they earned each month when they worked. You must save money in a 401K or another retirement plan or you will find yourself living at a survival level.

You see, social security was only meant to be a small amount to keep you from starving, it was never, never set up to be a retirement plan.[:0][:0] It should never be viewed as a retirement plan! Can you live on 20% of what you earn today?? I think not![:0]

Without facts at hand, I think that Social Security was, indeed, intended to be a retirement income plan.

Please note, the words "intended", and "without the facts at hand".

You're right but I'd go further to say that you aren't living within your means if you aren't "investing". Inflation is a b*tch and a savings account won't save your azz and neither will savings bonds or CD's when it comes time to retire.
