I never did understand why people care about points.

Sure, its cool, but i was raised to hunt for food, not for points. But, whatever

Because we don't want to take both boots off in the snow...[:I][:I]

In Missouri where I hunt, which just happens to be west of the Mississippi, we count both sides. For Game and Fish I believe a point has to be one inch, would have to check the regs. But, for us if you can hang a ring on it, it counts. This is for whitetail.

Western count is one side for a symetrical typical rack.
Then there are 4x5 with eye guards (eastern count would have called it an 11 point) then there is a 6x7 bull elk. or a 6X7 with kickers or trash.
Westerners just give a little more detail to the count then to say "I got me a 13 pointer" as in the east.

I was going to ask "if you have five on one side and four on one side, which side do you count?", but I think MVP just answered that, if I was smart enough to understand it. [:D]

Because for the most part the higher number of points on a buck means it is that much smarter and took a little more skill to take.
Spikes, fork horn and the three pointers are pretty stupid.

When you get a bigger buck you outsmarted the smarter buck denoting more skill to take it.

I am not a trophy hunter and I have taken spikes as well myself but there is more to an animal then the food it provides.
In the days of the American Indian, when clothes and Shelter were fashioned from the hides of animals, that was as important or even more so then the food that it provided.

There is no one in America that needs to hunt for food. you can go to the gracery store to buy it.
You can go to the store to buy clothes also.
But there is a connection with the ancient to be able to fashion beautiful hides into something usefull and to eat the meat of the animal that you took yourself.
An antler with more points is more ornate and pleasing to the eyeas a decoration and memorial to the animal you hunt.
Atleast that is how I see it.
