45 Long Colt

Our Big 5 Sporting Goods in Texas has a sale on right now. They have the Marlin 1894s going for $339.

I have been waiting to get a 44 Mag and they are out of them, but they have the 45 Colt in stock. Mentioned it to one of the old ranchers I know and he recommended the 45 over the 44.

Any of you folks have experiences with the 45LC?

    As a pistol cartridge, yes, but not chambered in a rifle. And as a pistol cartridge I like it -- like it a lot.

    The .45 LC has traditionally been loaded to somewhat reduced power and pressures, due to the number of old guns still in use that were never designed for the stresses of modern, full-power loadings (and to the number of people who refuse to believe that certain loadings in certain cartridges are not necessarily safe in all guns chambered for those cartridges, as well as their next-of-kin, to whom our courts regularly award spectacular damages every time Darwin's theory of nature weeding out the weak and stupid is proven....). With new cases and in a strong enough gun (your responsibility to determine whether the Marlin you're contemplating would qualify), the .45 can be loaded as heavily as the average person would care to handle. It has a long-standing reputation for fine accuracy. Much the same can be said about the .44 Magnum, but that does nothing to diminish the potential of the .45.

    My 2 cents: The .45 Colt is a great revolver round, but in a Marlin rifle I'd get a .44 magnum.

    I own two Marlin .44 rifles and they are fantastic guns. I can't see a .45LC doing anything better than a .44 magnum.

    I would buy the .45 LC over a .44 mag. The .44 mag Marlin rifles just do not have a fast enough twist rate to stabize heavy buddits, the .45 LC Marlin rifles do. As I recall the .44 mag rifles have a 1:38 rate of twist. and the .45 Colt have much faster (1:20) rate of twist. I never had much luck with heavy .44 mag buddits in these rifles. Corbon makes .45 LC heavy buddits with power to equal the full house .44 mag cartridge.

    I had a 25-5 S&W in 45 Colt. Great pistol, though thin in the bolt notch so could not load it very hot. The only problem I ever had was the small rim. Tore lots of them out of shell holder. I'd get the 44.

    have a Rossi in 45colt fun little carbine , never had any problems with the rim being to small on a 45,

    I would love to have one of those Marlins but there are no big 5 stores this far up north and they don't do out of state sales [:(]
