First time this happened! Gasoline woes!
I drove the Expedition to work the other day and as usual, it was out of gas - the light was on. So I stopped to get gas and the pump shut off at $75. Appears that is all you can get on a credit card. It could have held probably 2-3 more gallons but I just left it at that. Ouch!
Expedition - 11.5mpg
Charger - 15.5mpg
We gotta get a better commuter car! I am thinking about a totally stripped Yaris - 40mpg! The fuel savings would almost cover the nut on that car.
Trip to work = 55 miles round trip
Charger = 3.54 gallons (premium gas) = $12.06/day = $242/month
Expedition = 5.23 gallins = $15.66/day = $314/month
Yaris = 1.37 gallons = $4.11/day = $83/month
= $159/$231 month savings!
Expedition - 11.5mpg

Good thinking.
Gonna be a lot of people looking for a 40mpg car, including me.0 -
Lets see what happens with the gas prices now. I believe I heard an oil tanker hit a bridge spilling oil and another was sunk in a storm in the black sea or something. 0 -
My Metro is still getting 50+mpg.It has over 200,000 miles on it. I should get a backup engine ready for it.
Geo Metro's are flying out of the salvage yards around here. They are getting hard to find for a small price.0 -
I'll keep my gas hog!
Actually I am thinking of selling it to get something even bigger!
I only drive about 100 miles per week and a tank of gas in my Bronco lasts me 2 1/2 to 3 weeks without a problem unless I have a doctors apointment in Columbia and that is a 120 mile round trip.
95% of the time that I drive it is for pleasure so I will keep what I am comfortable in!0 -

If it was diesel I would consider it![;)]
I am wanting diesel for my next truck I think.0 -
Another fact that most never consider! Anyone who has been over seas can tell you that we have had it good on our gas prices here for a few decades! If you go to Europe they have been paying the equivelent of over $5 per gallon since the late 70's or early 80's!
I am sure Mond can speak up and tell us how much per litre they are paying now! I know it is probly atleast double what we pay!0 -

I am in Chile right now and gas is around $690 Chilean Pesos per liter (about $1.20 U.S.) At 3.785 liters per gallon, that is about $4.50 per gallon.
When I was in Senegal last month, it cost me $63.00 US to fill the tank on the rental car that still had a 1/4 tank left.
In Spain it was 1.08 Euros per liter. That works out to about $5.90 per gallon.
We still have it better than the rest of the world.0 -

My point exactly!0 -
My ramp van gets only 16mpg, but it's well worth it. And my 4WD Dak gets only 14, but again well worth it. I couldn't do without either.[:)] 0 -
Why not get a Honda 250 - gets 70MPG, doesn't care about stopped traffic, and can always find a parking spot.
I am like GRD, though - retired, and I only drive a little except for vacations. Big cars are comfy, and they WIN when hit by any of the usual meep - meeps.
2002 Tahoe - 14 MPG
1994 Blazer, fullsize, Diesel - gets almost 20 MPG on highway, but a lot worse off-road!0 -
Y'all are toughing it out at $3.25/gallon.
You may be singing a different tune in three years, at $6.25/gallon.0 -
My Dodge weighs over 7,000 pounds. It gets 22.4 MPG from a Cummins diesel with 220,000 miles on it and just getting broke in. I don't think I would feel the bump if I ran over a Geo Metro.....
Diesel is about $3.50 a gallon now. I am sure independent truckers are just thrilled to spend $1,000.00 or more for a fill up.0 -
SUV's and big trucks, loved only by those that have compensation issues. 0 -

"As oil prices edge up toward $100 per barrel, remember these charts when analysts emphasize political instability or pundits excoriate 'fat cat' oil companies. The real issue is what appears to be a hard global limit to the rate of production."

We commonly have 7-8 people in the Expedition - at least once every 2 weeks. Plus we used to haul a boat and a travel trailer. That's why we got it!
Funny - I've heard the same thing about those that drive Corvettes - so which is it - big cars or small cars??0 -
I haven't moved my F-150 outta my driveway in over 6 mos. Been driving the car everywhere. Truck gets about 12 mpg and the car gets over 30. 0 -
Yep, the "compensation issue" that i have is that I have a big, wide Butt, to g o long with being 6'5", and over 450. My wife is nearly 6', and is over 250. We just won't fit in a Yaris. We typically tow a 3500 pound Tent trailer on trips - the Yaris would not be able to do that. We typically vacation on deep sand, usually many hundred feet from the last paved roads, in order to fly kites. The yaris would get stuck. We have international guests with their kite bags and gear, more often than not. Four or five folks, and their gear bags would overload a Yaris or Fit.
I kinda like it when the greenies are all going to the meep-meeps, cause then I can see ahead in traffic. All they see is "GoodYear" going past their windows.
Yeah, we're compensating, but we're also Large and in Charge. Now get outta my way, willya? Either that, or we'll squash ya like a bug. Hammer down, and smoke all those insects - they need fumigatin'!0 -
My local station has two 'fine print' sort of signs posted on the pumps.
One says that the transaction limit is $75.00, and if you need more, you should 'initiate' a second transaction.
The other indicates that whenever you use your debit card, a 100 dollar debit is posted against your card/account. When you've completed the transaction, the debit will be removed, less the price you paid for the fill-up within, 1)minutes, 2)hours, or 3)days, depending upon your bank's particular policy.
Get ya' comin' and going don't they?

That comment made me chuckle. A corvette is hardly a small car. It is usually considered a big sports car.
In any event, each person can make up his own mind about what to drive. Part of that equation is fuel mileage. It would bug the crap out of me to routinely drive a vehicle that gets sub-20 mpg efficiency. Heck, I have a car that gets 23-26 mpg, and I'm thinking I'll want to move down from a V6 to a 4-cyl when it comes time to replace it.
Comments such as " kinda like it when the greenies are all going to the meep-meeps, cause then I can see ahead in traffic. All they see is "GoodYear" going past their windows." do make me wonder about compensation issues. Of course, I hate being behind big SUVs and trucks because I can't see a damn thing down the road. Good thing I'm fast enough to go around them.

The "compensation issue" I have is that I drove 18 wheelers for 16 years and I am just not comfortable in a Yugo!
And like I said if I was comuteing I might consider something smaller but I basicly only drive for pleasure and want what I am comfortable in!
And you know I really do not care if the "GREENIES" do not like it! Last I checked in this country I am allowed to drive whatever I damn well please as long as I keep it registered and have insureance! If for some reason I cannot afford to drive my gas hog someplace it is simple, I do not go! But to be honest that will never happen!0 -
I miss the gas mileage that my '03 Civic got. I used to drive 80 miles a day when I was stationed at Fort Drum. Now I drive about 20 miles/day so I guess I can afford to keep my '01 Blazer but every so often I miss that Civic. It is nice to be able to throw a 150-quart cooler in the back on the way to a hunting trip though. 0 -
Let me see...
2002 Subaru wagon = 24 mpg
2004 Nissan Stanza - 38 to 41 mpg
2005 Scion Xa = 32 mpg
1990 Ford F-Superduty 460 dually = 6 to 7 mpg
If I feel the need to compensate, I drive the BBT (Big Black Truck).
I mostly don't drive it.

How do you like your Subaru wagon? An Outback appears to be a nice cross between gas mileage and AWD traction plus space in the back which is plenty for a single guy like me. I've been considering getting one in a couple of years. I'm going to drive the wheels off my Blazer first.0 -
I'm crazy about the Sube. It has the GT package and is a superb handler. I have tooled down I5 from Portland to LA, with the cruise set at 105, getting 22 mpg. We bought it new and have just passed 100K. ZERO maintenance, except for brakes and oil changes - Castrol 5W30 since 500 miles.
It still looks contemporary.
I like the turbo Outback, but this handles better and gets lots better mileage.
I have never had a car that I would recommend more strongly. My MIL & FIL both have Sube wagons - in LA - and they are very happy with them, as well.

Buying a new car to save money is a loosing game. You don't actual pocket any savings until the car is paid off. When you drive the thing off the lot you lose a few thousand dollars right there in depreciation. That buys a lot of gas. How much interest do you pay on the life of the loan ? More money you could spend on gas.
I will stick with the full sized 360 ci van, the 360 ci Durango or the 4.3 Blazer. All are paid off and all will carry a butt load of stuff to the range for me or to the stables for the wife, pull a good sized trailer, haul a bunch of home improvement torture implements, etc.
It also helps that I am retired and the wifey works from home [ for now, big changes possibly on the way [:(]]0 -
"with the cruise set at 105"??
y'all got a Autobahn out there?0 -
'02 grand prix: 28-30 mpg
'03 Tahoe: 16 mpg.
I drive the grand prick to work and whenever I'm by myself. The 'hoe is the family vehicle.
Edit: Yeah I put 70 bucks in the tahoe gas tank this morning. Had to recycle the pump at 50.0 -
"Buying a new car to save money is a loosing game."
You're absolutely correct, unless a person drives a tremendous amount. Depreciation and transaction fees (sales tax, registration, etc.) will eat up a lot of money.
In the long run, however, people are paying more attention to fuel efficiency. When it comes time to buy a new vehicle, people are paying more attention to fuel mileage.
As I said earlier, people can drive whatever they want. I'm not paying their fuel bill.0 -
Yeh the way everything keeps going up, I wonder how much it's gonna hurt the Christmas (holiday) shopping this year? I saw on one of the news shows in the morning it could go the 3.50 buy spring, heating fuel around here at the pump is 2.899 already and it isn't even cold. 0
