Lowes calls them Family trees
Lowe's refuses to call them "Christmas trees," chooses to call them "Family trees"
In an effort to avoid the use of the term "Christmas tree," Lowe's has renamed their Christmas trees and are now calling them "Family trees."
In their Holiday 2007 catalog, containing 56 pages of Christmas gifts, Lowe's advertises hundreds of gift items, including scores of "Family trees." In fact, the word "Christmas" only appears two times in the entire holiday catalog. The ads mentioning "Christmas cover only 12 square inches of the 5236 square inches available.
Lowe's even has one of their Family trees turned upside down on a stand. We are not sure what the significance of that is.
Lowe's evidently did not want to offend any non-Christians, therefore they replaced "Christmas tree" with "Family tree." Of course, if Christians are offended that is evidently ok.
An on-line search of Lowe's does reference some "Christmas" items. In fact, a word search of their Web site gives the exact same number 174 of the word "Christmas" as it does the word "holiday." Most of the items mentioning Christmas appear to use the promotional line given by the manufacturer.
Their Holiday 2007 catalog features scores of products, including lights, wreaths, trees, and yard decorations. Most people would associate these items with Christmas, but not Lowe's! Except for two obscure references, they refer to everything in their catalog as "holiday."
Click here to see the front cover of the catalog and a page featuring their "Family trees." catalog ad.
Take Action
Send the e-mail to Lowe's. Ask them why they refer to their Christmas trees as "Family trees."
Forward this to your friends and family and ask them to send the e-mail.

I like traditional holidays.
I like Halloween, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, and especially Christmas.
I know that Christmas wasn't begun by Christians, it was begun by pagan Romans and called Saturnalia. I know that the Pilgrims detested the idea of Christmas and would put someone in the stocks if they dared celebrate it.
I know that Christmas came from Germany to England in the 1840s, and quickly to the US, before the Civil War, via the works of Charles Dickens.
Despite all of that I love Christmas. I loved singing "Silent Night" in grade school at the Christmas pageant.
I loved going caroling when I once lived in a Colorado town which did lots of caroling.
I am not a Christian, yet I love Christmas.
For the past several decades, secular progressives have been trying to destroy Christmas. Getting towns to cease with the manger scenes, it can't be done with tax dollars.
Getting the schools to do away with singing "Silent Night," it might offend a little Buddhist boy.
Getting stores to quit using the word "Christmas," but just calling it "Winter Holiday" or some such euphemism.
I am living proof that being exposed to the traditional Christmas does not brainwash you into becoming a Christian.
It makes me very sad to see the American traditions watered down, and destroyed, for the sake of political correctness.0 -

Defending Christmas
By David M. Huntwork
"All the Whos down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, did not." - Dr. Seuss
It does appear that the efforts of those attempting to preserve the idea and holiday of Christmas are starting to pay off.(((((((((((( Lowes has finally agreed that there is truly no such thing as a "holiday tree" and are once again offering Christmas trees and Walgreen's has pledged that next year "things will be different" and their confused `holiday trees' will once again be offered as Christmas trees as well.))))))))))))))))) Kroger has issued a letter stating that it uses a variety of greetings and advertising materials during December including Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Season's Greetings, and Happy Holidays but "We have not and do not intend to ban any of these greetings, including Merry Christmas". Wal-Mart, under pressure of a threatened boycott from various Christian groups, no longer requires its employees to wish you `Happy Holidays'.

Can't you read a link dumbass ? 0 -
It is pretty funny to see people defend free speech as long as they agree with that speech but once that speech opposes thier views, they bow on up.
No one is compelled to shop at Lowe's by anything other than thier convenience.
We fuss and gripe about WalMart but spend billions there every year. I hate going to WalMart but they have run every small business in my town away. Is that a bad thing? It depends on who you ask.0 -

Lowe's apologizes for catalog calling Christmas trees "Family" trees
Following a phone call to AFA Director of Special Projects Randy Sharp this morning, Lowe's sent the following correspondence from Chris Ahearn, Vice President, Public Relations for Lowe's.
Randy, Thanks for taking my call this morning. Let me reiterate my apology that we had an advertising error that created a stir. Here's a statement that we'd appreciate your posting on your web site, if possible:
Lowe's has contacted the AFA and assures us that it is proudly committed to selling Christmas trees this year, as it has done for more than 60 years. The company apologized for the confusion created in its 2007 holiday catalog when it headlined the page of Christmas trees "family trees." The error was not caught before the publication was distributed, and Lowe's says it is disappointed in the breakdown in its proofing process.
Lowe's assures us that they refer to trees as Christmas trees in this season's television and magazine ads and in its advertising flyers. The company says it is redoubling its efforts to proof its catalogs in the future to prevent this issue from recurring.
We appreciate Lowe's for listening to its customers and responding appropriately to our concerns.
In order to keep from loading up their e-mail, we have thanked Lowe's for their prompt action.

I get worked up over people who call themselves "Christians" and can find nothing better to protest. I dislike the trees and I dislike the obligatory gift-giving. I'd rather see something in a store during the year and say "wow, so-and-so would really like that" and buy it for them. I don't need a holiday to be generous. I'd rather take the money that I've already spent on the gifts that I've already purchased (yes, done shopping already--got it done last week) and buy a huge prime rib dinner complete with tickets to some form of high-end entertainment and maybe a limo ride to boot. That's what I'd rather buy for my family--something that we can all enjoy together just once a year. There is so much individual greed associated with the Christmas holiday that it's nauseating. Forget the guy with the ice-covered beard who wears his underwear on the outside of his pants and go get that gizmo that spoiled Johnny is screaming about! 0 -
+1, idsman. 0 -
That is not ice in my beard, it is just white.[:(!] 0 -
BS response I believe did not happen.. I do not believe it. 0 -
Like rockatansky & idsman I dont like the social pressure of the secular Christmas tradition much either. 0 -
1. I already have a family tree and Lowes has nothing to do with it. If they wanted to be PC they should have used "holiday tree." And while they're at it, why not sell orange ornaments for Halloween, green/gold/purple for Mardi Gras, pink/white for Easter, red/white/blue for July 4, etc so "holiday trees" could be sold year round and not just towards the end of the calendar? Somebody is missing a huge marketing opportunity.
2. There is no way "family tree" got into a Lowes flyer as an error. It was intentional by somebody, and somebody else reviewed and approved it, and there was no "breakdown in the proofing process." If that response is real they are running scared on account of money (which is certainly their right since they are in the business of making money, and they thought "family tree" would make more money, but now decided that "Christmas tree" will make more money).
3. The whole "Christmas" vs. "holiday", "family," etc. is simply an attempt to minimize the impact of Christianity on our society, which is really sad. Though I have a hard time getting worked up over some of these things, the intentional removal of Christ from Christmas is simply stupid. I agree with one of the responses above - I don't need a holiday to tell me to be generous, but since there already IS such a holiday, why intentionally trash the tradition? The only reason is removal of Christ from society as a whole. Once the secular progressives have "succeeded" with that, our women will be wearing bee-keeper outfits and we'll be cutting off hands of theives and heads of religous dissenters. The Muslim religion WILL fill any void left by the removal of Christianity. Like um or hate um, "love your neighbor" is far preferable to "kill the infidel."0 -

When are you folks going to realize that Christmas is hyped to the max by retailers to sell you more crap? I am so sick of Christmas being turned into an event where you must buy crap for everone you may possibly know or have known, whether you have the means to do so or not.[V] C'mon lets go buy, buy, buy!!! And keep the retailers happy.
I'm thinking that most of you on this forum are not little kids anymore, so why do you let big business dictate to you (or as I see it, sell you)?
If you want to focus on the true meaning of Christmas, celebrate Jesus' birth privately or go to church and do so.
As far as Lowes is concerned, I think they are right on in calling a tree a "family tree". What the hell does the tree really have to do with the true meaning of Christmas? Nothing--we have been sold this by retailers all our lives in order for them to maximize their profits. I know full-well that is may not be a popular stance to take, but it is how I see it.
End of rant[:D]0 -
I guess this isn't the end to my "rant". It is a documented fact that a huge number of suicides take place during the "holiday" season. One of the reasons, I think, is that there is a segment of the population who may feel they cannot produce the goods or spirit that is expected of them insofar as giving material things. This, over the years, has turned me against this silly spendfest. You know as well as I that if I don't pile up the required goods, I will be looked upon as inadaquate or as a scrooge. Tragic, but true. Even at a nuclear family level we get pressure from spouses to spend, spend, spend.[V] 0 -

End of rant[:D]
Why do we have a decorated Christmas Tree? In the 7th century a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, went to Germany to teach the Word of God. He did many good works there, and spent much time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the cradle of the Christmas Decoration Industry.
Legend has it that he used the triangular shape of the Fir Tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The converted people began to revere the Fir tree as God's Tree, as they had previously revered the Oak. By the 12th century it was being hung, upside-down, from ceilings at Christmastime in Central Europe, as a symbol of Christianity.
The first decorated tree was at Riga in Latvia, in 1510. In the early 16th century, Martin Luther is said to have decorated a small Christmas Tree with candles, to show his children how the stars twinkled through the dark night.
That is why we have Christmas trees.
End of education![:D]0 -

We get suicide prevention briefs in the Army at least once/year. They always tell us that numbers are up around the holidays. I'll look for the stats if you want me to. They're out there.0 -

And the percentage of people who actually prepare for retirement decline and decline and decline as the Visa bill goes up up up. The underlying factor behind these financial sector woes are that people want to have what they can't afford.0
