Pinewood Derby Cars
Anybody ever do one when they were in Cub Scouts? I'm starting one with my son. I have fond memories of working on Pinewood Derby cars with my dad when I was little. My son picked a police car theme, since I'm a cop. Think we're going to design one of the new, black & white Dodge Chargers. Wish us luck!

I enjoyed making them as a kid with my Grandpa and father.
Both of my sons were pack champions. The key is not so much design but weight and getting the wheels on straight. The 2nd key is placing the car on the track so it does not rub on the guide board.
Both sons used a basic wedge shape with some other cuts to make it appear more like a car. The bottom was hollowed out with a dremel tool and they bought the weight sets you can get an the scout stores or Hobby Lobby.
Fun days, I would enjoy doing them over again.0 -
Pinewood derby... theres a memory I could live without.
My dad didn't take much interest in my cub scouting exploits, so my car was pretty crude - just the wooden blank with some stripes painted on it. Even as a 7 year old kid, I was so ashamed when I brought my little car in and saw that others had freaking works of art... delicately sculpted, professionally painted and detailed. Whereas mine looked like a half-retarded monkey made it.
Needless to say i didn't win anything (as an 8 yr old, my knowledge about graphite or wheel straightness or weight distribution was limited). From that day on, my days in the cub scouts were numbered [:D]0 -
the one i built my son won the local, then what ever was above that, when we went to state he was still in first place through the elimination, then some s.o.b. kid i could have strangled slammed his car down on the track bending the wheels just enough to make it go from a first place winner to last, we where still below weight though, i think the aerodynamics, and the break free for lube helped 0 -

I forgot to mention using graphite on the wheels also makes a huge difference. 0
