U.S. Govt. = Insurance company?

When did all this stuff about if something bad happens (IE: Hurricane/natural disaster) the 1st thing that happens is people sticking their hand out to the govt.? When did Uncle Sam get into the home owners insurance business?
Of course I refering to the news reports of the Katrina aniversary and all the New Orleans crying about how not enough has been done for them. Will we EVER see a time when these losers begin to take some responsibility for themselves?
All of this is ample evidence that Liberal govt. and it's programs will be the death of the "American way".
Disasters are a part of the hman condition. Since the dawn of time, Mankind has edured many types of disasters and rebuilt and survived. And there's certainly nothing wrong w/a helping hand.
But when that hand comes from the govt., it seems it's never enough. As we are seeing in NO.
"Screw a helping hand they say, I want to be made WHOLE. BETTER THAN WHOLE!"
When did this become our responsibility?

    We have yet to see a real disaster. Wait for the New Madrid to rock again. It will be Katrina X 500. Most people, even with earthquake insurance, will be screwed. Our insurance industry will be pummelled. If they do get out of it, count on a 200% increase in your rates if not more.

    As much as I pay in taxes, they damn well better come to help! [:D] Had rather see the govt help Americans than feed Iraqi's or Ethiopians or any other country.

    But is our resposibilty to rebuild their homes? If these folks didn't have home owners insurance, they gambled and lost. End of story.
    I have no problem w/the govt. bringing in emergency help and supplies immediately following a disaster. Or rebuilding stronger dykes and such infrastructure stuff. But there are people on TV standing in front of their homes cry beause the Govt. hasn't built them a NEW one yet.

    I dunno...are we sending money to Africa to build homes there or subsidize the costs of homes? If so, heck yeah, take that money back and use it here.

    You'll only get help if you fall within the pool of the ABSOLUTE POOR and DESTITUTE. In other words, you can lose everything but you'll get nothing if you were a lower-middle class and tax-paying citizen. You're basically forgotten.

    President Hoover was criticized for trying to get federal government involved in natural disaster relief efforts. The entire history of our welfare nation is tied directly to the history of federal response to disaster. Not only that, that's how the "New Deal" was couched--a response to a disaster by which all were entitled to help from the federal government.

    You forgot the richer also. We have an affluent suburb to the east of us that flood s every year from the river. The rich don't move away from the river, instead they go on TV and cry about how hard it is for the to lose everything again this year and then have the government buy them new things.

    I'm guessing that is the response of your state and local government though--not the federal government. The entire role of disaster relief should be handled by the state and local government. My beef is that the federal government gets involved in everything. The less localized the relief is, the less efficient the tax dollars are spent.
