Selling Truck for Fuel Efficient Car
getting rid of the F-150 4x4 and buying a honda civic for gas mileage and better parking. $3.10 a gallon for gas here and parking is a nightmare in this city. i figure i will save $3,500 a year in gas with the new civic

I feel your pain. My car gets 20/25 MPG on 91 octane which is $3.58/ gal. here. The good news is that I only drive 10,000 miles/year.

Wife gets between 30-40mpg with here new civic. Its nice, has a lot of get up and go for a 4 banger. If you get an auto transmission, make sure you get a 5 speed, its well worth the little extra to make it a standard option. 0 -
My shortbed Ranger did O.K. with city parking, but I had a Placard. It got 26 m.p.g. on the highway, with the tires at 35#.
I picked up a 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo with 80,000 miles on it. The car gets 31 m.p.g. if I keep it below 60 m.p.h., but drops to 24 m.p.g. at 75 m.p.h. I paid $2750 for the car, and $760 for everything it needed to keep it going for a couple years or longer.
So I sold a Ford, and bought a Volvo, which is owned by Ford.
I'd be reluctant to buy a new car at this time, because of the immediate depreciation.

I think if you run the numbers, you will find that there is no ROI on your plan. The parking makes sense a little, but unlikely you will ever realize a gain in gas savings from the loss you will take on the 150 (unless you bought it used and can sell it for close to what you paid). 0 -
I just off-loaded my 2000 Exploiter for a 2006 Taurus. The Explorer was only getting 13 mpg combined and the Taurus gets 25 combined, damn near doubled my mileage. The Taurus is a whole lot more comfortable as well. Call it a grandpa car, but I like it. 0 -

I just gotta ask [and prolly won't remember to check the thread later] what kind of car do you have that makes you think the 91 octane is needed?
IMO most fuel injected engines run just as efficiently on 87.0 -

Rented a 2004 Taurus while I was overthere - it was a good car.
Comfortable, and reacts fast.
But it didn't go more than 19.6-21 mpg (according to the meter in the car)0 -
My full-size 1500 Silverado with a V8 engine gets 19 mpg. I ain't trading it anytime soon. 0 -

...I'm not rich by any means...but I don't care if gas goes to $10 a gallon; I am not going to get rid of my main truck (12-14 mpg) to drive an encie-weencie freakin truck!...sides, I need a full size truck.
...No room, sit so low as to not able to see "over" a dog crossing the road...and your are sitting shoulders touching to someone next to you, yuck! Drive something tiny, and get hit by a real truck, and your DEAD, no thanks...I'll just keep my gas hog and be happy with it...[;)]0 -

Which brings us back to another (controversial) way to reduce our nations fuel consumption....... REDUCE THE SPEED LIMIT. With at least 2 of my vehicles I get 5 mpg more if I keep the RPM at 1900 or less which means about 62 mph so that is what I drive.0 -
I need a whole lot better mileage, but I'll be damned if I'm doing without a pickup ever again. All I've ever owned are small pickups - S-10's and this friggin' Dakota - but I just couldn't do without one. 0 -

Reducing the speed limit will not ruduce the gas mailage on all cars as all cars have different gear raitios,power bands, etc... For example my 2004 Chevy Venture gets:
27 MPG @ 70 MPH
29 MPG @ 80 MPH
25 MPG @ 90 MPH
With the combanation of gear ratios and power band that Chevy put into the Ventures I recieve my best gas mileage at 80 MPH. I have put 110,000 miles on this thing in just over 2 years so I really watch how I can maximize my milage.0 -
I've got a 1994 Taurus that gets 25-28mpg, depending on how fast I drive. If I go between 55-60mph I get about 25. If I'm running between 70-75 I get 28 maybe 29. Guess how fast I drive.[:D] 0 -

And it's even 4WD, wash the floors out, theater seating, washable seats, removable rear seats. We've hauled EVERYThing in this. Fullsize couches, snowblowers, tillers, mowers, 35-2x4x12's, flooring, landscape blocks, etc.
Civics are very fuel efficient and, as we all know, extremely reliable.0 -

My new Mustang gets 24mpg highway. My old Tempo got 27. My freind's Hyundai Elantra gets up to 40.
I'd rather have the 'stang than an Elantra any day.
I would consider buying a small used motorcycle, maybe an older Honda (no crotchrockets please) to ride around town, but for trips I would not want a smaller car than the ones I've had, and would always be happy with a bigger one.0 -
My Ranger (3.0 v6) had terrible gas milage 12-15 mpg, switched to an Explorer (4.0v6) and get 15-18mpg. I do a lot of city, stop and go driving. luckily it's at 3am, s there's no traffic.
That Ranger had a ton of torque though with 3.73 gear ratio.[:p]
Forgot to add that tire choice may affect Gas Mileage too.

2007 F150 CREWCAB 5.4L still only gets 14.2 with a really strong tailwind.
Mama's 01 Bullet Mustang 4.6L V8 gets 26 mpg @ 90mph.[:D][:D][:D][:D]
But at 60mph, in town the Mustang gets 18-21mpg.
Our S-10's and Rangers in the fleet with 2.2L/2.4L 4cyls, get around 6-8mpg!!!!.
But then they are overloaded at least 2,000 to 3,000 pounds.
Allways running in 4th gear, trying to stay out of the traffic.
Our drivers know all the sign lanuage too!!!0 -
I drive 3500 miles a year. 2.5 miles to work. Also take bike in warm weather so gas milage not much of a factor. My wife works 1/2 mile from home. My Chrysler gets 25mpg on freeway, 18 in town. And its a weapons carrier, not a mini van.....[:)] 0 -

My Tiburon got 31mpg running 100-105mph back from Chicago last August. That was with the A/C cranked.
We were running 105 in a stream of people doing 110+. I was in the slow lane then entire trip.0 -
My '99 3 door GMC is a 4x4 Sierra Classic. It gets 14 to 15 mpg in town and about 19 or 20 on the highway. My wife really likes it, but I have given some thought to moving it, and getting something like a family type sedan. 0
