Ever buy at auction then think Oh S%!+,
What have I done ???
About 1986 my wife & I went to Macon, Mo. to Lolli Bros Sale barn,
{Dominic Lolli & I went to Auctioneer's School at the same time in KC,MO} anyway back to the subject at hand.
The auction was an exotic animal auction that Lolli Bros hold annually. Here we are, Barb & I sitting on the front row of the bleachers watching all the different animals go thru when in walked this guy with 2 Brown mane african lions on leash's, they were 6 months old. boy, were they playing & cute. My wife being the animal lover that she was started poke'n me saying how grateful she would be if I bought one.
Let the bidding begin 100 - 150- 200 -250 --sold choice for $250.oo
there was a male & a female. Some guy behind us took the female & a guy sitting beside us took the male. My wife was crushed, anyway about 20 minutes went by when this little kid came up to me & said his dad wanted to talk with me about the male lion cub that I had been outbid on { I got off at $200.00 } so Barb & I went outside to talk with him. Here stood this guy with a kinda worried look on his face, are you the one that was bidding on this cub ? he asked
Yes sir, I replyed. Well are you still interested, you see I just called home & we raise birds & my wife said DO NOT BRING IT HOME, so I need to sell him.
Thats when it happened, that damn little lite bulb in my head clicked & I started talking price, Well after about 10 minutes, here I stood counting out 2- 100.oo bills to this guy, & he threw in a cage / carrier.
Meanwhile my wife was down on the ground play'n with her new kitty.
We loaded up & headed home, when about half way home, something inside me clicked & I realized that we now own an African Lion.
I turned to my wife and found that worried look on her face too.
Anyway we were living with my Grandmother at the time, she was an elderly lady, heavy set, gray haired, & try'n to enjoy her years that she had left.
We pulled up in front of the house & went inside, grandma was in bed reading a western novel, she looked up and said, Well, what did you buy ?
I replyed A Brown mane african lion. She raised her eyebrows & said right, no really what did you buy, I repeated my answer.
Her next statement was well if you did bring him in & I'll fix him breakfast.
It was about 2 AM when we got home, So I said OK and went to get him,
Oh by the way did I mention his name was ZIGGY, anyway I got him out of the crate in the pickup, put him on a lead line & in the house to grandmas bedroom we went. she had her back to us when we went into her room, Ziggy being the playful sort jumped with his front feet up on her bed and kinda let out a little roar.
Grandma lived in an older house with about 12 ft ceilings, & I really didn't have any idea that she could move that fast, or scream that loud. I could barely get out the words Grandma meet Ziggy.
Thats the first time I ever wondered if she had been in the Navy, she uttered words that I didn't think she even knew.
We kept ziggy about 2 weeks, you see after we bought him I found the org seller and asked what & how much to feed him, he said Oh, about a half a chicken a day and don't feed any red meat as it will make him revert to the wild state.
half a chicken, that don't sound too bad. lets just say that guy was off on the amount it takes to fill up a 6 month old lion, the more correct answer was about 4 & 1/2 chickens a day. figure up that at the cost per chick from your local grocery store.
I ended up selling ziggy to two guys that worked for Harkers Meat Co. They drove a delv truck for them, They loaded him up in the front seat & headed north, I thought to my self They better not let him smell all that meat in the back.
That was the last time I bought a cat.
Grandma passed away in 1991 & right up till they tore down the old house you could still see her fingernail indents in the bedroom wall.
Ziggy by the way went on to live with a guy in Chillotche, Mo who owned a bar, was have'n trouble with breakins up untill he put ziggy in the bar overnite. No More Breakins

Bought an airplane at auction, one time, in Midland, TX. Made a phone call to some friends after I signed the papers and sold it for almost twice what I bought it for ... within 20 mins. They flew in the next day - we bought each other a few pitchers at Betty's Place, down on S. A St. ... and we all left very wobbly and happy![:D] 0 -
Bought one of those custom full size 3 year old bus RV's . WTH was I thinking... it went cheap. Anyway, both of us ( the gentleman I went with looked at each other ) kinda stunned. He ask what was I going to do with it? We went out in the parking lot and started looking it over real good and acting like it was the best thing since sliced bread. People started coming over and looking at it too...I sold it one hour later for a 5 grand profit. I guess I got carried away that day bidding. 0 -

I once paid $2 for about a pickup truck load of random bric-a-brac near the end of an auction. It was a long time getting rid of it but did make money from it.0 -
Dan that's great, I would love to own a lion one of these days... 0 -
Dave W. said....."Dan that's great, I would love to own a lion one of these days..."
I'd think about that a some more.
I know a man that owned several exotic animals. I remember looking at his Jaguar and asking him if he planned on taming him (Raj). He said "No, the last guy that tried that got neutered. That's why I was able to get him at the low price of free."0 -
I have been involved several times raising big cats: lions and jaguars. Lion cubs are like beer barrels with attitude. Every thing is great as long as it is going their way. Try to change the program and you find out who is boss. I knew or know of a number of people killed by such pets, in several cases the children of the owners were killed. Not really a good idea.
One of the Jaguars I raised was really a very nice cat, very affectionate and playful. Played a little rough, but was careful with his claws. He was several months old when I was away for a week or so. When I returned, I greeted him and then went into his enclosure. I was suddenly flat on my back with a jaguar licking my face (think your house cats tongue is rough?). I realized I simply could no longer play in his league, and stopped going in with him.0 -
Thanks Danlittle; the thought of Granny doing the high jump while cussing a blue streak has me laughing pretty hard. [:D] 0 -
Good laugh! Was at an auction, wanted ONE item that was in this huge pile of this-and-that. Opening, bid $1. No other bidders, lot knocked down to me for $1. Now what am I going to do with all this other crap? While scratching my head, other folks started walking up. "Did you want that ______? Give you a dollar for it." 10 minutes later, had my original item I wanted, $24 in cash, and a smile. I like auctions! 0 -
Another good'n Dan. 0 -
