blue book editions

Do gun blue books become obsolete when the next edition comes out or are they still usable if they are a few years old? I can get a 2005 edition for about $4. Will it give me a close idea of what I should be paying on used guns even though it is older?

    yes and no...28th edition is current..some guns change w/collector status ..average everyday guns usally don't..IE. 870s etc..some guns you can't even begin to go by the BB prices just gives you a starting point more or less..spring for the newest version..and make it last for the next two yrs..my .2...Loko [8D]

    I would buy it for that price.
    I have several blue books from the last several years and I use them for reference and also to see trends in certain makes and models.
    Some models are stagnant and some other have doubled in the same time frame.
    By comparing the values from 10 years ago to the current values is good knowledge.

    Blue Book price has nothing to do with anything other than one mans, Steve, idea as to what sells books. If you want to know the value or selling price check the Gunbroker sold auctions.

    im getting ready to list the 8th and 11th edition for .01 ea. look for it! i tend to keep one 10 years old for ref.
    just because a gun is stale doesnt mean its value decreases, it just means not many are trading hands. so, if a gun is good and the owners are holding on to them for use, it wont reflect in the gun list because b-b prices are based on national SALES averages. this is why b-b's are deceptive and its why they cost over 35.00 to buy one, they want your money.

    Another good bit of information from the blue book is when they under value a firearm.
    Some people will not bid above or buy a firearm above the posted value in the blue book.
    if you have seen a trend and the blue book is behind the times as to the current trend, then you may have to buy at a higher price then stated in the blue book while others balk at spending 100.00 over what top dollar is according to the blue book.
    Duckhunter is right when he stated that the most current up to date value of firearms can be found right here on Gunbroker doing a completed auction search.

    Good points MVP, and just another reason to buy a Blue Book and study it, especially if you are in to firearms, IMO. Notice when you visit a gun dealer, they have a copy of the Blue Book and not the Standard Catalog of Firearms. The Blue Book is often referred to as a buyers-book while the Standard Catalog is seen by many as a Seller's Book. GB is certainly looked upon as the best gun auction site by a great many people.
