AUSTIN, Texas - An angry crowd beat a man to death after a vehicle he was riding in struck and injured a young girl, police said Wednesday.
Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night.
The driver had stopped to check on the little girl at the entrance to an apartment complex when a group of men attacked him, authorities said. The passenger, David Rivas Morales, 40, got out to try to help the driver, but the crowd turned on him, said police Commander Harold Piatt.
Morales was beaten to death by as many as 20 men and left lying in a parking lot, Piatt said. A preliminary autopsy listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death.
The little girl, 3 or 4 years old, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver, who got away from the crowd, is cooperating with investigators, police said.
Piatt did not know how many witnesses had been identified, but thousands of people had been in the area for the daylong festival. He said no guns or knives appeared to have used in the fatal attack.
Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.

That story is so incomplete as if to defy comment.
1. What was the deceased's race?
2. What was the little girls race?
3. Was the crowd predominately white or black?
4. Is this a black/white thing?
5. Was the guy who got beat drunk and acting the fool when he hit the girl?

My understanding is that the passenger got out of the car in an effort to difuse the situation and aid his friend (the driver).
The angry crowd, now more like a mob, turned on the passenger and proceeded to beat him to death.
Events like this make me incredibly sad because people let their emotions get the best of them. The little girl had non-life threatening injuries.
The passenger's family now is without a father, son, brother and/or husband.
Absolutely needless violence at an event that is celebrating the day freedom was restored to many deserving Americans.

Police say Morales was a passenger in a car that hit a small child. Witnesses told police that several black males then started to assault the driver. They told police the crowd then started beating Morales when he got out of the car to try to stop the fight. The driver was able to get away. The child hit by the car was not seriously hurt..

You probably never heard of it because you are not from Texas. Juneteenth, (based on the date of June 19, 1865), had always been celebrated by blacks in Texas since the end of the War Between The States. Texas finally made it a holiday, and in recent years, to my knowledge, the NAACP civil rights movement has made ever attempt to get it to become a holiday in all other states of the union. Today, it is celebrated in 24 other states, and the people in those states that do celebrate this Texas celebration of old, make no attempt to identify its history with any fact other than the day all slaves were freed in America. Nothing could be further from the truth. However, Texas was the only state that did celebrate it as a holiday, again, to my knowledge.

Yeah, Juneteenth is a place that I wouldn't be if I was of any other ethic
persuasion - other than African American - and to get yourself involved
on the 'wrong end' with a bunch of hyped up drunks and dopers -
obviously a bad move.
