Ethics Question
Just asking opinions.
After two days of "negotiating" a firearms trade through emails, a final offer was sent.
The reply received was......
"Sounds like a fair deal to me, man! I'm up for it if you are!"
Is that a yes?
A commitment?

This is my opinion, and only my opinion.
In the civilian world, or as bobski would say "CivLANT" or "CivPAC", it really doesn't matter what kind of truck you have on your flagpole, if any. I wouldn't stray to far from standard trucks though, just as a matter of taste.
In a way, it's a little like ship's ball caps. Most ships carry a supply of ball caps which the crew buys and can wear at sea. The ball caps come in three versions. There is the plain visor ball cap for E-1 through O-4, one with scrambled eggs visor for O-5 and O-6 and one with scrambled eggs visor for O-7 and above.
Most ships will have one, maybe two, officers who rate scrambled eggs. Some ships have more than that, but my point is the demand for scrambled eggs ball caps should be very small. However, most of the "tourist trade" wants the senior officer ball caps. Ships sell as many if not more ball caps with scrambled eggs as with plain visors.
When I'm out and about I see people wearing senior officer ship's ball caps fairly often. I'm pretty sure there ain't that many pot bellied retired Admirals in this little hamlet. Rather than take offence, I'm happy to see people who are proud of their Navy and showing the souvenirs from their last "Open House" ship tour.
Same with a flagpole. I like to see people who are proud of their flag and display it. As long as there is no intentional disrespect, I can't imagine anybody questioning or challenging the appearance of a personal flagpole.0 -

Well, JamesRK, ya see I eat Breakfast every Wednesday with a bunch of "Ex-military" (I hate that term) pilots of every stripe...I am/set the datum from which they are all measured, as I was a Merchant Marine Academy Grad, LTJG (Merchant Marine Inactive) Navy Reserve, and a civilian private pilot. Many in the group started out enlisted, and worked their way up to nearly Flag Rank. It tickles me to know stuff like this, and confounds them at times.
I got in a discussion last week, where one of the men asked, almost rhetorically, "just what IS a "Tot" of Rum?" , and I did the research and sent them an e-mail when I had sussed it out.
The Breakfast group is without any doubt, the finest group of men I have ever had the pleasure to be associated with, and as darn fun a conversation as I have ever had in all my life is had at least once a week. This Forum is my group's internet equivalent, and I take great pleasure that I seem to have been accepted as a useful member here as well. I take pride in my rather unique status that I enjoy in the breakfast group due to my unusual career path. I like to delude myself into thinking that I give as good as I get in both groups.
Back to the topic at hand: As a past, minor, Reserve Naval Officer of low rank, and in light of my (now) civilian status of "Not much", I should have only a bare Flagpole top, in order to be correct, right? Just fill the threaded hole with a bolt that would not be visible from the ground?

agman1999, almost everything the Navy is associated with has some sort of meaning or tradition behind it. [:D]
You would think that the first priority of a young hard charging Naval Officer standing his first watch as Boat Officer would be to know how to find the boat landing and then find his way back to the ship without running his boat aground, running over a buoy or having a collision. But Noooo. Those thing are important, second only to his knowledge and observance of Naval traditions, military courtesy and protocol. Even boat hales and replies have a standard format and each one has meaning. For example, when a boat comes within earshot, the Officer of the Deck shouts "Boat Ahoy!" If the Boat Officer replies "Aye, Aye" that tells the OOD the senior passenger on his boat is a Commissioned Officer. If he replies "No, No", his senior passenger is a Warrant Officer. If he replies "Hello", his senior passenger is an enlisted person. There are eighteen standard replies to "Boat Ahoy!" and the Boat Officer and Officer of the Deck know them all.
There is even tradition behind how you leave your knife and fork in your plate in the Wardroom when you finish a meal. And napkin rings. The hard part is finding somebody who cares. [:D]0 -

HandLoad, from what you say here I'd say you rate a flat truck. Good luck finding one. The world is full of Commodores, but very few able seamen. [:D]0 -
