Aviator sunglasses
Back in the mid 60's to the early 70's when I was working on the flight line, all of us guys had aviator glasses that we purchased at the PX. They came with a plastic carrying case that attached to your belt. Course, back then, I think they had "real" glass lenses (dark) and were expensive ($15-$25, I think) even in those days. If you broke 1 of the lens, you could have it replaced. Best sunglasses I have ever owned and have since wished I still had them. For the life of me, I cannot remember what company made them. I've searched the internet and located Self-Defense Armory which sells aviator glasses (Randolph Military Issue or American Optical Pilot sunglasses) that seem to be comparable to what we had "back then". Since Randolph didn't start producing aviator glasses until 1972, I can only "assume" ours was American Optical.

I don't remember who made them back then, but I saw some RayBan in the Navy Exchange a couple of weeks ago that looked like the "real deal". I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was in the neighborhood of $150.00. Adjusted for inflation, that would be about the same price. 0 -

They are in fact American Optical. Very faint but stamped on the inside of both stems. Got mine in 1966! Still have old blue vinly case as well. 0 -

Hidalgo in Texas has kept me in large aviator style frames and lenses for some years. They have all styles of frames and lenses.
I prefer the Large Aviator type despite fashion trends because the frame is out of my field of view.0 -

Kinda thought they were probably American Optical. I knew they weren't RayBan.

I know the ones I was issued in 1977 when I was on Dustoffs were RayBans. I know this because I still have them. This was at Hohenfels, Germany. I was with the 2nd/ 421st Air Ambulance Company at the time. I had the chance to pick up a second pair when I was stationed at Ft. Hood with the 507th M.A.S.T unit. I still have that pair too. Sadly, now I need corrective lenses. So, I can no longer wear them.0 -

I have a pair of these. Can't remember where I got them. Heavy. Glass lenses Smoke shade. On earpieces marked AIRCO. USA Z87 5 3/4. Previous owners name scratched on earpieces. 0 -
