Unusual comment today
During lunch a group of us were sitting in our breakroom eating and had Fox News on as usual. The story of the moment for once was not Paris Hilton, but instead Ruth Graham, the wife of Reverend Billy Graham.
I remarked that I could remember going to the revivals in south Texas as a young boy with the church group and family. I said something to the effect that while I am not overly religious, that I have always held a deep respect for Billy Graham for the way he lived his life...he truly practiced what he preached and was not one of these that you see today with miracle spring water and prayer cloths and whatever else you can imagine them asking money for.
A young black airman was sitting there with us (she is 24 years old) and said that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton could stand to take a few lessons from Reverend Graham on what a man of the cloth was supposed to truly be and how they should act and carry themselves.
This young ladys' remarks made me realize that there might be some hope for some of the younger black generation out there that will not blindly follow these self appointed leaders.

I have some very good friends that are black people....and I can't stand idiots no matter WHAT color they are. While at the same time I have yet to meet any religious "leader" that I can stand of any race. 0 -
The majority of the career military personnel who are black are solid citizens. Overall, the example they set for young folks in general, and for headstrong young blacks, specifically, is admirable to say the very least. Such leadership is awfully difficult for many young blacks to accept, especially so for many who are raised outside the South. However, those who serve a successful first tour of duty learn how to be responsible citizens.
My biggest beef is that we do not hear very many blacks condemn the likes of those that lead the NAACP, like Julian Bond, or the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who are outside of the military, like the young lady you mention. One important thing that we have to bear in mind to be fair on this note is that the media has an agenda in this regard, and they seldom give a voice to those who do not echo their values.0 -
Too many do not condemn those who are "in power" of the black community. I have been in the AF for 25 years now and I agree that a vast majority of the black personnel who stay in more than one hitch usually turn out to be very solid citizens and level headed. These are the people that should be some of the role models for the younger black generation.
This particular young lady seems to grasp the issue quite well. She mentioned that if a white person speaks out against Jackson, Sharpton, etc, then the black community just calls us racists. If a black person speaks out against them, then they are branded traitors to their race.
Its odd that the white community can speak out against or for leaders in the white community and we are not considered traitors by our own race.0 -
If we get lucky in America, we will see the black race mongers put in their place, the NAACP become defunct for all intents and purposes, and all preferential treatment based on race and/or minority status cease to exist. 0 -

Not so odd, since very few people take it upon themselves to speak for the white community as a whole. As for why the black community has self-appointed leaders, well it all stems from the Civil Rights movement.
The Civil Rights movement, as necessary as it was, is a prime example of what happens to a revolutionary movement when it gets long in the tooth. The leaders have to keep whipping up the passions of the foot soldiers, whether the original aims have been met or not, to stay in power.
Despite the fact that blacks no longer face the barriers they did before the 60's, they still scream racism. Why? Because their "leaders" do their best to keep that mindset alive. So where the rest of us might see some jacka** getting pulled over for going 90 in a 50 MPH zone, Jesse and Al's converts see nothing but a case of "driving while black."
Now what would happen if Al and Jesse said, "Okay guys, the revolution is over. If you're poor or ignorant, it's nobody's fault but your own. Work hard and educate yourself and it will get better, since America is a land of opportunity, not guaranteed success." I tell you what would happen. Someone else would come along and tell them, "Don't listen to them! I'll tell you what you want to hear - it's somebody else's fault! You don't need to work hard - your ancestors who were in slavery already did all the work for you! Time to get something for nothing!"
Human pyschology is a sad thing. People need a cause for why they are down and out and very few are willing to take solid advice.0 -

In 1968 I was in basic training in Fort Jackson SC. We had a black Drill Instructor that was tough. In formation one day he pointed out he was "BLACK" and pointed out a group of blacks a distance away. He said you see them over there ? They are "N....." stay the hell away from them ! Every so often I hear that again. 0 -
the question is, by billy living a Godly life and showing the world it can be done, has it changed yours? if not, he failed his mission. if the words he spoke are fused in your mind and they have little or no effect, it didnt work..........yet.[;)] 0 -
