Just watched Sand Pebbles again. Quite possibly the best movie ever made. [:)]

    Excellent movie. I saw it for the first time a couple of years ago and watch it every time it's on. It's a shame they don't make movies like they used to.

    Steve McQueen made two movies that I really liked, but the ending of both movies really made me mad. One was Sand Pebbles and the other was Tom Horn.

    Growing up, that movie was one of the ones that inspired me to become a sailor. The first time I went to Hong Kong, it was in my thoughts. Oddly enough, I bought a bootleg VHS copy of Sand Pebbles there. I still have it.[:D]

    The book was great too. My uneducated opinion is that in some cases the casting of the characters didn't follow their descriptions in the book, namely Jake Holman. Nevertheless, the book had one impact on my life, it started me drinking White Horse Scotch.

    the Sand Pebbles in installments each week.

    I liked the film and I felt that McQueen gave a very solid perfomance. I also read the book and while I thought it was better than the motion picture, I still watch the movie every time it is on TV. Serving on board a ship like the San Pablo looked like pretty good duty, not a lot to do except running drills and then putting in to port for drinking and whoring [8D]. I am sure that the $20 to $25 per month those swabbies were earning went a long way in China back then and of course you always had a bunk and hot food waiting for you back on the ship when you just spent your months pay in two days and are now broke!

    One of my grandfather's cousins was a 'river rat' on the Yangtze River
    back in the 20's.

    The only family story that has survived about 'cousin Franklin' was the one
    where he was chasing a prostitute who had stolen his wallet across the
    cartops of a moving train, slipped and broke his leg. According to the story,
    he finished his liberty before he had the leg taken care of ... and she got
    away![:D]
