What Happened To Gas Cans? ATT: Oklahoma Members
They have fallen victim to Al Gore and the paranoid lunatic tree-huggers, I figure.
I keep some gasoline around for the mower mainly, but also for my chain saw and trimmer. The mower uses a lot more fuel than the other devices.
I have a 6 gallon can that I had fitted with a Blitz pull nozzle. Unscrew the cap, pull out the nozzle, pour gas, push nozzle back, replace cap. I have also a few smaller cans, some with Blitz nozzles, some with regular flex nozzles.
None of my cans have caps on their vent holes.
At one time, I could go and buy a replacement nozzles and vent caps for my cans, but no more.
I went today to buy some cans and/or nozzles, and found all that is available is some sort of spring-loaded, self-venting, California-certified nozzles. There is a sort of a hook on the front end of the nozzle. You have to hook that over the lip of the gas tank and then push down to release any gas. That might work fine for the mower, but not so well with a smaller device. Mash down, it flips over.
Fellow at the hardware store tells me the old cans and nozzles were outlawed, so we are stuck with the Al Gore cans now. He said he heard that the old-style cans and nozzles are still available in Oklahoma.
True?
Shall I have to drive to Oklahoma to buy gas cans?

Apparently so. I ran into same problem when I aquired a 5 gallon container w/no nozzel. Couldn't find one anywhere.
But as a trucker I noticed that I passed alot of abandoned containers w/nozzels along the roadside. So whenever I saw one, I'd remember where it was. And if still there next time by, stop and get the nozzel. Now I have a few spares. Po folks has po ways.0 -
I can no longer mow my lawn myself, so I have it done. My guy, Jose' Juan Gonzalez Hemenez Rodriguez Lopez Johnson has the old style cans. He brought them from Mexico. [:)][:)]

From here, Oklahoma is a lot closer than Mexico. 0 -
have several 5 gallon plastic gas cans & every has a screw on nozzle that leaks......irrrrritating 0 -
I haven't been anywhere near oklahoma in a while, but I bought one of those here in st. louie (unwittingly, never seen one before) I hate those things. if that's all you can buy, that's bad news. yecch. 0 -
It's the new safety cans, and they suck!!!! It's all they sell around here anymore, the old style are outlawed!!![xx(] 0 -
Bet you could find some of the old kind at garage sales. I see em all the time.Keep you eyes open. 0 -
yep and its harder then hell to fill up your truck tank with one if you have more gas on the ground then in the tank. dont ask how I know this [}:)][:D] 0 -
If anyone has access to them, I would buy a few Gott spout kits, and/or Blitz spout kits.
I would also buy some new/old stock Blitz or Gott cans with the old style spouts.
Okies?0 -
...I wonder if "ol Al has this problem when he fills his mower before he mows? [}:)]
...That's the problem with the lefties "bright" ideas and quick fix feel good laws...they don't think about any of the consequences of such BS laws...kinda like the spotted owl debacle. The enviro-whacko's put thousands of people out of work by halting/stopping the logging in/around the spotted owl habitat.
Now the spotted owl numbers have grown enormously, so many in fact some type of owl that has the spotted owl as one of its main food sources has moved into the area and is munching down on the spotted owl in huge numbers, The new "fix" for THIS problem from the envir-whackos??? KILL the owl that is eating the spotted owl!!!
...Isn't this somewhat contridictory to their motto of "preserving" wildlife"?...idiots...[;)]

Have you tried any old school small " Ma & Pa " hardware stores? All the major chains of stores are probably converted to the new style cans, but I bet there are a few old ones left in some smaller towns. 0 -
Yup. I will keep looking, but everyone seems to have gotten rid of the old cans.
I will also check yard sales.0 -
Up here, They literally came in all the stores and removed them from the shelves!! 0 -
HARRISBURG, Pa., - Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Acting Deputy Secretary for Air, Recycling and Radiation Protection David J. Allard today announced that Pennsylvania is adopting the new federal guidelines for portable fuel containers, which require gas cans to be more spill-proof and less likely to release harmful vapors into the air.
"For years, filling portable gasoline cans at a service station has been a messy proposition," Deputy Secretary Allard said. "Spills and releases of gasoline vapors into the air have been harmful to the environment. Features on these newer gas cans will reduce the amount of gasoline vapor that is released into the air."
The newly designed gas cans:
-- Have only one opening for both filling and pouring;
-- Have an internal automatic shut-off valve that stops fuel flow from the can when the receiving fuel tank is full;
-- Automatically close and seal when not being filled or pouring;
-- Are constructed of a material that minimizes the escape of any gasoline vapor; and
-- Are warranted by the manufacturer for at least one year against defects in materials and workmanship.
Because the new gas can regulations minimize the loss of gasoline vapors through the container walls and will reduce or eliminate gasoline spillage during use, VOC emissions will also be reduced. It is estimated that the new regulation will result in a reduction of 5,700 tons of VOCs per year statewide.
Pennsylvania retailers will have until Jan. 1, 2004, to sell off their inventory of the older gas cans, but can begin selling the new ones immediately.
Visitors to DEP's display at the state Farm Show in Harrisburg can see some of these new-style gas cans and can pick up a discount coupon to buy one.
"Whether around the farm or around the home, these new gas cans will reduce pollution," Deputy Secretary Allard said.
The gas cans are designed to prevent the formation of ground-level ozone, also called smog. Ozone is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced when nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like gasoline vapors combine in the presence of intense sunlight. Ground-level ozone can aggravate diseases, such as bronchitis, emphysema and asthma, particularly in children, the elderly and people with pre-existing respiratory problems. On high ozone days, even healthy adults may experience chest pain, coughing, nausea, throat irritation and congestion. Prolonged exposure to high levels of ozone can lead to lung damage.0 -

David - The last time I was at Wally World and Orschelns they still sold just the replacement nozzel. I will look today and see if they still have any. I know they still have the old cans. The only problem I have with the ones now is NO vent hole. Vents through the spout. But a well drilled hole and a plug works wonderful. If they have any, how many do you want? I am going to town after lunch and will double check then. 0 -
I spill more gas with the new style gas cans than the old ones. Gas comes out in spurts rather than one even flow. Typical bureaucratic BS (like the low-flow toilet) 0 -
If you get lucky, you may be able to have some old style ones shipped to your house. When they were outlawed here in PA, even though my vendors still carried the old style, it was unlawful for them to sell and ship them to Pennsylvania. Once the news spread about the law, we had one gentleman come in and buy every old style spout and breather cap we had in stock! 0 -
I don't know if they still have them, but not long ago Cheaper Than Dirt had some new five gallon NATO Jerry Cans. You have to buy the nozzles separately. 0 -
...I have quite a few of the 'old" style...haven't seen the new ones, I have half a dozen of the 5 gal. jerry cans and a nozzle for each...no problem...[;)]

David - In Hugo, both Orscheln's and Wally World both have Blitz filler tubes and both have plenty of 5,21/2, and 1 gallon cans. 0 -
I know a guy that knows a guy that took a sharp razor knife and slit the sliding part with the hook on it down the side (parallel with the spout), then peeled it off like peeling a bannana. Remove the spring, o-rings and brass sealing ring and vola... you got a "normal" spout.
[;)][;)]0 -
Hey nunn,Its funny you brought this up cuz I have the same problem.I bought two cans today,Took the stubby spout and cut about 2 inches off the "muzzle end".Then I took a dremel type tool and gutted the spout.Inserted a 5/8 barbed hose coulpling(barbed both ends),hose clamped that,Then hose clamped 18" of clear hose on the other end.Your going to have to drill a vent and plug it(I use a lag screw).It looks like hell,but it functions well.Keep in mind,I go through alkot of gas cans.This may not be for you 0 -
