The worst part about getting a new rifle...
At least one in a new caliber. is having to reload some ammo for it. I started reloading in 1976 (well, I did take few breaks since then) and I confess I don't enjoy it. But some calibers require it due to the high cost of factory fodder or being something not readily available.
I picked up a Ruger #1 in .458 Winchester Magnum from a buddy so I had to snag some dies, brass, etc to put it to work.
Just loaded up 40 rounds in preparation of a nice weekend sometime in the future to try it out. Loaded some 390 grain pointed lead bullets over 28.5 grains of 2400. Should clock about 1400 FPS and I hope it will prove to be a good plinking load. For real economy I also loaded some 250 grain lead bullets sized .454 for the .45 Colt. I've done this in my 45/70s with pretty good success. Used 23.5 grains of 2400 and should run around 1500 FPS.
Anyone else shooting one of these Rugers (or any .458 for that matter) and if so what's your plinking/target load?

Cousin bought a Ruger 480 revolver. I think it was foolish. Can only find bullets from Hornaday. He doesn't reload either. 0 -

I thought the worst part of buying a rifle is wondering if this thing that you just legally purchased and never misused would be banned a few months, or years down the road.

If bought legally and then banned, wouldn't

For now they probally would, but you don't think they will get around to banning them once and for all if people don't stand up for their rights? Think on it.
Edit: A good analogy is a avalache, both for anti-gun people, and us. Starts with something small, and balls into something bigger and bigger unless stopped.0 -

Yeah, I'm having some trouble working up a good case of pity for ya, man.
But then again, I like to develop loads for new rifles. It's just the marathon pistol caliber sessions I get tired of.

Here are my Ruger #1s. 
No, full loads in a .458 don't scare me, but I don't really enjoy them, either. I have a custom built .460 and it's a beautiful rifle that gets shot very little. I will treat this .458 Ruger like a 45/70 and plink with it.0 -

I have a Colt Sauer, Grand African in 458 but I only shoot factory loads out of it. Even then, only occasionally. The recoil isn't bad at all and I used to own a 375H&H Winchester that kicked worst. I believe the stock shape, has a lot to do with felt recoil. More of a novelty gun like my Weatherby 460, that I bought for workmanship and beauty rather than to use. (appreciating gun values had a lot to do with it too)0 -
You're right. Very few of us ever need something like a .458 but it is fun to pull one out at the range. 0 -
The worst part is getting it from the car to the gun safe without
Shewhomustbeobeyed seeing it. I don't know about a .458 Mag. I have
all I can handle with heavy loads in my 45/70 #3 rifle.0
