Stingy wife
My wife is stingy. I don't mean she's a little tight with a dollar, I mean she could give Ebenezer Scrooge stingy lessons. Before we got married, her brother told me she would hold onto a nickel until the buffalo dropped a penny. Sometimes it gets on my nerves, but then there are times when she's funny.
She's been out of the hospital for a week now, but she still can't go to town yet, so this afternoon when I had to go in I asked if she wanted anything from town. She said she wanted a double cheeseburger from McDonald's. She told me to order it from the dollar menu and she wanted it without cheese. I asked her isn't a cheeseburger without cheese just a hamburger? Why don't I just order a hamburger? She explained that the double hamburger isn't on the dollar menu, so it's cheaper to order a cheeseburger without cheese than to order a hamburger.
It reminded me of when we lived in Spain. We would stop at the USO from time to time for a sandwich. They had a table set up beside the counter with lettuce, tomato, pickles, relish and condiments for customers to dress up their own sandwiches. The first time we went in I got a Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato (BLT) sandwich for 35?. She asked if I had looked at the menu board. Of course I did. That's how I knew they made BLTs. She brought it to my attention that a BLT was 35?. A Bacon and Egg sandwich was 30?. In other words a BLT with an egg was 5? cheaper than a BLT without an egg. From then on I ordered Bacon and egg sandwiches and put lettuce and tomato on it at the side table.
I know kristov will explain how I have robbed McDonald's and the USO, but I got a chuckle out of it.

Actually I think that would probably be Dheff who'd tell you that what you did with that free lettuce and tomateo was stealing, based on his salad story from several weeks back. If having a cheapskate wife is a problem for you then I'll be very happy to let you pay Mrs K's bills for a few months so that you can experience both sides of the spectrum. 0 -
I do the double cheese burger without cheese all the time. 0 -

There is a big difference of adding lettuce and tomato to a sandwich (which is what it was put there for) and filling a bowl with letuce tomato, onions, bacon, peppers and salad dressing (which is a combination of sandwich sides, baked potato sides and salad sides, none of which they purchased, making it theft) for free rather than buying the salad in line. But not everyone can see it. I guess you can't.[}:)]

Years ago, Sandy and I used to go to Goff's Hamburgers in Dallas. They had a #3 which was a Chili Cheesburger with just chili, cheese and meat for $3.85. They had a #4 which was a Chili Cheesburger with chili, cheese, onions and meat for $3.90. They would add onions to a hamburger for free, and the lady in front of us ordered a #3 with onions. The boy at the counter told her that was a #4, and she told hime she didn't want a #4, she wanted a #3 with onions.
After a little discussion, the boy called the manager. He and the lady had the same discussion, and she informed him she was only going to pay the $3.85 and they could call it what ever they wanted, but she was ordering a #3 with onions. The manager gave in.
Before we left the place, he had changed the price on the #3 to the same $3.90. I thought it was funny.[^]0 -
GOFF'S?????!!!!!
Mom used to take us there to eat on paydays. Hamburgers started somewhere around a quarter back then. I think I got a #2.
After Goff's we went a few doors down to Ashburn's for ice cream.0 -

I feel sorry for people who are/pride themselves in being stingy.
My take:
It's OK if being stingy has meaning/is useful. We were stingy for
the first five years of married life. We were saving for a house. We
ate LOTS of hot dogs and other cheap food and saw very few 'nights
out'/movies, etc..
Otherwise. without reason, stinginess is sad. I can't tell you the
number of people I know who have lived long and stingy lives,
never enjoyed their money - saving it for the kids - and once
thoroughly dead - their kids squandered all the hard earned
money in a matter of a few months/years.
Each to their own - BUT - if asked, my opinion, it will always be,
"How sad is that!"
I was launched into adulthood with a firm handshake from my dad
and $500 cash in 1963. Since my dad was an orphan and started
his adult life with a LOT less than that, there is little question that
he had the right philosophy - worked beautifully for me!

God, I wish my wife was stingy. She can justify without a doubt that the Gymboree pants that my daughter will outgrow after 2 wearings that cost $20 are way better than the $3 Target specials. But since we have made a conscious choice to let someone else raise our kids, we can afford it. [:p]
My sister, now SHE is stingy. She is a CPA and budgeted expenses for her and my brother-in-law. No lie, she budgeted herself $0 for lunch and weekly expenses at work each day. The funnier part is she sticks to it!0 -
I'm not stingy I'm frugal! [:D] 0 -
A stingy wife is better than a compulsive spender. Be thankful, be very thankful your wife is the way she is. Twenty yrs ago I would have said "I'll take her". Now I finally found my own. 0 -
I have a 72 year old neighbor that is very stingy with her money. So stingy (and wealthy) that she has been arrested 3 times for shoplifiting. She is a retired school teacher that was poor and abused as a child. Something back in their youth triggered this behavior. Where is Dr. Phil? 0 -
While attending Joliet Junior College, my nickname was the Norwegian Jew for being rather tight with spending money. I have since learned to overcome this habit. 0 -

My wife is both - a compulsive spender for herself and Deanna, and stingy with me.
Is that the best of both worlds, or the worst of both??
It is getting very old with me, and I have been very patient for over 26 years.

McDonald's has sales on hamburges or cheeseburgers from time to time.
Many of them will not let you special order them. They want the full price to leave the mustard off for example.0
